Making unreasonable promises.

Well - I did it. After lurking here on ActiveRain for a year, posting the occasional comment, writing a once in a while blog post, I did it. I made an unreasonable promise - and I intend to keep it.

Before describing my unreasonable promise (which is actually two unreasonable promises), I want to explain why I use the term "unreasonable promise". Recently, I attended a seminar in which we discussed the idea that the only thing we as human beings can control is whether or not we "honor our word". Now, they don't mean "keep every promise" because sometimes that's impossible. Instead, honoring your word means making every effort to keep your promises - whether they are to yourself or to someone else - and when a promise is broken, acknowledging that you broke the promise. Then - making the promise again. No excuses, no shuffling off responsbility onto someone else. Just acknowledgement and re-promise.

For example, if you are late to a meeting due to traffic, instead of saying "I was late because...." you say "I'm sorry. I was late. AND there was traffic. Now, I'm renewing my commitment to you to be on time."

Now - where does the "unreasonable promise" come in? Well - if you are going to be honoring your word, then it is very tempting to only give your word when it is easy and/or reasonable to keep it. So - the people in the seminar challenged us to make UNreasonable promises - and then work very hard to honor our word.

So - I did it. First - I made one unreasonable promise, I agreed to participate in the 30 posts in 30 days challenge. However, I took it a step further and made a second unreasonable promise. After reading a post here on ActiveRain, I created the Facebook page "365 Things to do in Palos Verdes" and I have promised to post a note on that page EVERY DAY FOR THE NEXT YEAR!!! Whew! What a promise!

Today was the first day of honoring my word, and I am pleased to report I kept my promise. The first note is up on the Facebook page, and here I am creating my first blog post for the 30 posts in 30 days challenge.

Some of you may be wondering, why is this important? Why do we need to honor our word and make unreasonable promises? Let me tell you, ever since starting to live this way, I have had unbelievable successes in my life (just in the last month!!) My real estate business is taking off. My marriage is stronger, my kids are calmer, I feel more in control, and I have more time! Just from doing this! Unbelievable!

I believe that my facebook page will bring me untold success in my real estate business, and I want to give back to the ActiveRain community that has helped make it happen. Thank you ActiveRain. Here is to a successful 30in30 challenge, a great year, and to promises kept!!

Sharona - great goals, but the body and mind do need to rest and refresh.  Maybe you can get several days ahead on the creativity end and then log in and quickly do your daily post on those days that are set aside for rest and relaxation,  In fact for some setting apart days like that can be harder than continually being busy,  I wish you well in the pursuit of your goals.

Sharona, I love your post and wish you the best of luck completing your goals shared here. I had a similar ideas after reading the 101 blog ideas ... to do it for 365 days. However, I think I'll wait to see how I handle this 30 in 30 day commitment as I've done my first 7 posts and it is a challenge.

Dan - Thanks for your comment. I definitely plan to write several posts at a time when possible, and then just do a quick logon to actually post the note to facebook. Breaks are key!

Tina - I felt exactly like you did - I was thinking of doing the 30 in 30 challenge and THEN tackling the 365 days. BUT - 30 in 30 would have been reasonable - so, I bit the bullet and went for the unreasonable! I don't know if I'll make it - but that is exactly the point. 2 down - 2 to go!

Karen - thanks for your support, I appreciate it!
