I was just taking a moment to reflect on my first client who led to my first closing. After spending a few months taking the sales agent pre-licensing class, taking the test at the end of the class, and sitting for the state exam, I was ready to tackle the world of real estate like no one else. I had already told three friends right before I started class that I believed real estate was for me.
It was August of 2003, and I was armed with pocket card in wallet, an MLS login, and an Independent Contractor Agreement with growing brokerage. That first transaction, the one that puts a stamp of approval on all of the classroom learning happened for me in October of 2003. George was my first client, and he had become a friend. I encouraged him to take advantage of the great opportunities to buy a home instead of renting. 'Build equity George...don't throw away money renting...you get a break on your taxes..you have no one above you, beside you or below you.' George and I looked at about ten houses before he made the decision to put in a contract on one. I worked with his lender, Wells Fargo, to assist him in getting his pre approval letter. I recommended a few home inspectors and attended the inspection with him. I followed up with the attorney to make sure title search was good and that closing was scheduled at a time convenient to my buyer. And finally I got George to the closing table where he received the keys to his home. It was all about helping my buyer find a home and realize a dream. There is that moment at closing when the buyer(s) get their keys and it is such a 'YES' for him/her! I like those moments and I appreciate George for helping me create that moment for him in his life.
As I started to tell my start up story a year or two after closin George, I was surprised to find out that most agents go several months before experiencing their first time closing. Furthermore, the broker I contracted with had a 100% commission plan and spent very little time training agents. So an agent had to hit the ground running talking to 'whosoever' if he wanted to build a business. I'm glad I learned the business in this fashion. It forced me to do whatever within the boundaries of the law to make it happen...my first time.
