If you are looking for a grand way to add style and distinction to your home, try installing decorative molding. There are many types available to help you achieve whatever look you have in mind. Here are the most common molding types:
- Crown molding, also called cornice, surrounds the room where the wall meets the ceiling. Choose crown molding according to the architectural style of a room. Detailed molding is perfect for formal or period-style homes, while simpler molding looks more sleek and modern. Crown molding has the added benefit of making ceilings appear higher.
- Frieze, or dentil molding, is a horizontal row of squares that fit beneath crown molding to soften the transition between the crown molding and the wall.
- Picture rails and chair rails run horizontally around a room to protect the walls. Picture rails usually run near the top of the wall to facilitate hanging pictures. Chair rails are normally 32 to 36 inches above the floor, the height where a chair back may scuff the wall.
- Baseboard moldings run along the bottom of a room where the wall meets the floor. This is often similar in style to crown molding, only slightly less ornate.
- Door and window casings define the space around doorways and windows. Casings can range from a simple contoured strip of metal or wood to elaborate wood carvings.
Whatever look you are trying to achieve, by adding decorative molding you can infuse your room with style.
