(Not So) Wordless Wednesday ~ Horus and Hathor in the Temple of Edfu

Horus & HathorWhile we were traveling down the Nile River our ship stopped on the west bank of the Nile in the city of Edfu which was known in Greco-Roman times as Apollonopolis Magna, after the chief god Horus-Apollo. Construction of the temple began Aug.23, 237 BC.

The Dendera temple was dedicated to Horus and Hathor of Dendera (his wife). It is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak (which we also saw) and is one of the best preserved.  This is a photo of Horus and Hathor at the entrance to the courtyard.

Each year Hathor would travel from her Temple Denderah (Horus built it for her) to visit her husband Horus at The Temple of Edfu.  This would be a popular celebrated event marking their sacred marriage through the pilgrimage and great festival for all.  A real modern day marriage!

Married and with separate pads that is great....I just tried to suggest this to my wife after reading your post...now that she has quit beating me, I agreed that we probably don't need his and hers pads right now.

I thought it seemed logical...it has been going on since before Jesus was born...and we already have his & hers vehicles, bathrooms, chairs, phones, computers, e-mails, closets, sides of the bed, places at the table, alarm clocks, etc...it just seemed logical that we should have his and hers temples.

Maybe I will suggest it again when I get out of intensive care...LOL

I guess our sales would increase if husbands and wives decided to live like this---each would need their own home.  So glad you decided to add some words.  Would hate to have missed this great history lesson!!

Dorie - I think Horus and Hathor had the right idea.  I wonder if marriages would last longer if there were only visitations once a year, in a temple somewhere:-)
