While we were traveling down the Nile River our ship stopped on the west bank of the Nile in the city of Edfu which was known in Greco-Roman times as Apollonopolis Magna, after the chief god Horus-Apollo. Construction of the temple began Aug.23, 237 BC.
The Dendera temple was dedicated to Horus and Hathor of Dendera (his wife). It is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak (which we also saw) and is one of the best preserved. This is a photo of Horus and Hathor at the entrance to the courtyard.
Each year Hathor would travel from her Temple Denderah (Horus built it for her) to visit her husband Horus at The Temple of Edfu. This would be a popular celebrated event marking their sacred marriage through the pilgrimage and great festival for all. A real modern day marriage!
