My First Day Back to Work ... in Ocean City, New Jersey
For all of the dedicated readers of my postings, you are probably getting tired of my slowly wrapping up my return to work following bypass surgery. Well, it is over ... I returned to work today. The final rental week of our "summer top ten rental weeks" always sends mixed messages. Message #1 - it's back to school for the kids, back to work in the real world for the adults. Message #2 - for the island locals: it means the end of the busy streets, parking problems, etc.
I'm just pleased to be back to work for one thing, and very pleased that our son and his wife are here from California for a full week visiting for the second thing. But we have a pending interruption: Hurricane Earl with a storm track taking it somewhat close to the shore from North Carolina through New Jersey. For certain, we will have some strong waves and winds, beach erosion, and possibly more. But it now appears to be further out to sea which will possibly avoid major damage.
When I lived in the "real world," I never thought much about storms, hurricanes, winds, high tides, flooding, etc. like I do now living on a barrier island. We been through some mini-hurricanes which appear to me to be bad enough. And we experienced lots of flooding while living on the bay for about 18 months as our house was built. We've also been on the island when all the roads and bridges leading from the island were closed. Interesting feeling.
So I remain tuned to the weather reports, but hope for the very best for our little corner of the world. I'm certainly hoping that we can indeed celebrate Labor Day Weekend with one and all. But then it will be time to give the island up for about 6-7 months. That sounds real fine as well. Happy Labor Day ... and watch the weather report for Ocean City, New Jersey!!! dap
