Last week, I blogged about "green" remodeling for your bathroom.  In part 2 this week, I am continuing with tips about air movement and green materials.

Moving That Air

When remodeling your bathroom, it's a great time to consider the installation of a new exhaust ventilator.  These fans help remove moisture, mold spores and odors.  The average bathroom fan only vents the space between ceiling joists, which creates a perfect environment for mold and mildew.  This damage can spread to the walls and ceilings, so make sure your new fan vents completely outside of your home.

There is a slight problem with the installation of these fans even when installed properly, but it is an easy fix.  Heat can escape through the fan.  Therefore, you will want to fix this problem with a heat-exchange ventilator that uses the outgoing air to warm the cold air that can come in.  This type of unit costs around $250, but will pay for itself with the energy it saves.  Also, adding a timer switch to your fan will also save energy for those who turn it on and forget about it.

Selecting Green Materials

You don't have to be limited on style with your "green" bathroom remodel.  There are many great selections of classic ceramic tile that comes in limitless colors and patterns.  Many tiles have high recycled content.  Used tile is a good "green" idea and you can also consider refinishing your old tub and sink.  A hired professional will turn out the best results.

When choosing lighting for your bathroom, look into LED lighting.  This type of lighting produces pleasing light for your quality fixtures.  They produce little heat and have an average life span of 15-20 years.  You will pay three times as much for LED light bulbs, but the payback can be in as little as one year.

Paint with low-VOC options are perfect for continuing your "green" bathroom remodel.  Look for materials with the "Green Seal" certification to keep your entire project in balance.  And, good luck with your remodel
