Revival of the Front Porch?

By

Is the front porch coming back into fashion? With the brick colonials that have saturated the area over the last years, there wasn’t room for front porches. Let’s face it, it just wasn’t the style people were going for. There has been a recent revival though in the new construction industry with their designs including front porches. Builders like Mitchell and Best and Selfridge Builders offer floor plans which steer away from the typical brick with a grand arched entry and Palladian window

But what does the front porch offer? Do people really use it? According to this blog, the front porch can offer an attractive feature that could help boost the sale of your home. With photos being the first impression for a buyer, an attractive exterior makes a difference. This front porch space also offers an exterior living space  for potential buyers. Buyers imagine themselves in rocking chairs, sipping wine after dinner, watching the sun go down, all while sitting on their front porch. Will they do this? You probably know best as to whether or not you have really used your front porch, but quite often the option of using the space is more appealing than actually using it.

Al and Mary,

I was drawn to your post as my neighborhood is quite fond of hosting "porch parties".  It is within a historical district with several bungalows so the front porches offer a great "get-together place."  Your links will serve me in my quest to improve my own front porch.

Thanks!
