The importance of evacuating for hurricanes cannot be over emphasized! Back in 2004 Hurricane Charlie hit Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. There were four deaths from that storm in Charlotte County and they could have been avoided.

An elderly couple remained in their single wide trailer even though family wanted them to evacuate. The trailer was destroyed. A gentleman was in his condo in Punta Gorda, watching the approaching storm in front of his unprotected living room window when debris flew into the window at wind speeds of 150 mph. He died from his injuries. The other death was a gentleman who was safe inside his home when he remembered that something was on his boat that he had forgotten to get. He went outside to get it and was struck by a flying piece of wood - he died before paramedics could make it to his address through the downed power lines and flooded streets.
What looks like a peaceful beach can turn deadly within hours! Listen to the warnings and evacuate if told to do so! It is your life and the lives of those you love. Your belongings can be replaced, they are just things! Don't put your life in danger! Take the warnings seriously!
