Business Cards SUCK!

I hate business cards, sure they are pretty and glossy and include a picture (usually an outdated one) but do they really have any value for real estate professionals? Today I received a call from a client, he said “hey, check your email”, so I did, what did I find? 5 different revisions of a potential business card he wanted to use. Different colors, different layouts even different pictures. He was stumped and he was asking for my help. You know what I told him?

“Business Cards SUCK!” He says, “huh” I said you heard me, “Business Cards…..they suck”. I said “Joe, (that’s not his real name of course his real name is John), why are you wasting so much time on what your business card LOOKS LIKE?” I don’t get it. In my 10 years as a title rep here in the Phoenix Metro area, I have seen a lot of things come and go, and for the life of me I can’t figure out why business cards are not one of them. To go that is. Let’s look at your own personal experience. When someone hands you a business card, and sometimes 3 (which is comical all on its own by the way), when someone hands you a business card, what do you do with it? Well, if you are like me, it goes into your pocket, the when you get home you empty it into “the drawer”, and everyone has one. In my drawer you find all kinds of STUFF including a burial ground for business cards.

I put the business cards in the “drawer of death” (I call it that because once it goes in there it ain’t coming out except to the garbage when I go through the ritual of cleaning out the drawer every six months or so) and I never really see them again. When you give your business card to a consumer, they put your card (if they don’t throw it away right away) into their own “drawer of death” never really to be seen again. If in the off chance that they have a real estate need even in the near future, are they really going to go and look through the dark abyss of their drawer? Probably not, they like me, are going to go to the search engines, most likely Google since 67% of all searches occur on Google. That is where they are going to find a real estate professional and it will most likely be a real estate agent tied to a property that THEY researched. (that’s the trend by the way, consumers actually do their own research before calling you). That’s why I say Business Cards SUCK! Instead of wondering what your business cards should look like, focus on what it DOES, which is very little by the way.

So, what are you to do? Well, start putting your efforts into where the consumer congregates. Online. That’s where they are and that is where you should be. When someone asks me for a business card, ya know what I say? “GOOGLE ME”, and when they do GOOGLE ME they will find my blog, and twitter and facebook fanpage where they can read comments from other real estate professionals that have worked with me in the past, and that my friends says a hell of a lot more about who I am and my value proposition than a business card. So next time someone says, can I have one of your business cards, tell them, “GOOGLE ME”.

Side note….. and yes, I am being silly when I say this-but not really: You should have some form of web presence and a favorable one at that before you encourage anyone to look for you online. You would look pretty ridiculous if they couldn’t find you or even worse, found people from your past that have worked with you, complaining about your service levels or incompetence. If that is you, I have a great business card vendor I can refer you to :-) BURN.

I guess I am an unusual person then.  I too keep business cards and actually use them when I have a need for whatever they sell.

Hi Stephen-I get that business cards don't do for you what the internet does, but I can't see getting rid of them either.  Although a lot of professionals may put a business card in the drawer of death, consumers usually don't collect lots of them and yours may be the one they dig out of their pocket if they are looking for a Realtor.  I don't think business cards are going anywhere soon :).

As for me....I have piles of them....well, everywhere......purse, desk, on the floor.  And, often they go unutilized and un-noticed.....however, when I really need to find that # and vendor that I haven't yet gotten in my database those piles are where I'm looking......happy for the lender who recently gave me a pile of her cards recently I've had to refer several folks for re-financing.  I think its akin to lead generation.....we make call after call and collect card after card and when it comes down to it only a few pan out.....Its a numbers game and the numbers matter.

Thank you for your comments.  This post is meant to be in regards to the consumer are real estate agent position, not the agent/lender. Agents are conditioned to collect business cards and will have some kind of rolodex to store them, consumers...not so much. Not that business cards are going anywhere, I suppose there is a need for them for some people in some instances.  This post is merely to suggest that when a consumer looks for real estate, they go to the internet, they most likely will not have your business card in their hand when they need it, they will as I and 96% of other consumers do, go to the internet. Thanks everyone.

Stephen,

Sorry, I have to disagree. I am not a fan of business cards, BUT...I do keep them and make contact with the lenders, inspectors, realtors, title reps, etc. as needed for reference later.

Unless you have a catchy name like, Jiminy Cricket or Mickey Mouse, I am NOT going to remember your name to be able to Google you. Just my opinion.

Thanks Valerie, I guess its up to me to make sure that you remember me thun huh? I guess the point of this post is that you wouldnt need to rely on business cards as much as many agenst do if your SEO and web presence was up to par for when the consumer looks for property.  Us the right keywords and they will find you.... Not you, but you know what  I mean.

Hey, should I change my name to Jiminy Crickets? Would certainly be unique!

Yes Jiminy....I now see where you're going with the consumer end of things....Internet is the way of  the future and now!.... and staying in touch in whatever way you can with your sphere, database, colleagues and those iinternet searchers!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! @Mary, you get it.  This post is not necessarily an assault on business cards but a way to get everyone thinking about the future, I mean the present.....Internet.

Certainly a provocative title- you got me to read it.  I love your reference to the Drawer of Death.  So true!  I also laughed at the handing out 3 cards.  My favorite thing is when you just meet someone and they hand you 3 or 4 cards and walk away.  You might as well hand me the yellow pages (ahem!) for all I know about you and how you do business.

If they take a card home and subsequently look you up from the URL on the card, then throw out the card and bookmark your site, you're in. You left a trail of jelly beans for them to get back to their computer to "Google" you.  Just a misc. rambling on my part. What tangible object could be better to hand out than a card? Perhaps a stress ball with your website on it?
