By

The Bridges OF  Madison County is the much-celebrated work of Robert James Waller ( made into a 1995 film of the same name ) directed by Clint Eastwood. and starring Eastwood and Meryl Streep.  I so enjoyed that book... and the movie. The Bridges IN Madison County, are closer to home. Just twenty minutes from our cabin, these spans are singularly monumental -and they are real...and sometimes challenging...

The Bridges IN Madison County are About Transitions

But, for those who seek sanctuary, for those who seek enough space in which to complete the mission, though the waters be turbulent, there is a caring community -one that lives on from generation to generation- and, they say, all the way to Heaven.

The Bridges IN Madison County also are About Passages

Bridge Over the French Broad River in Marshall, NC

The essence of a life,  lived fully. Life is about winding roads that climb along mountainsides where streams call out, " Stop and picnic!"  ...and mighty rivers that test the bridge that connects one side to the other. Life is like an array of bridges-small, almost fragile, and hand-built footbridges, and the sturdy, stalwart ones for those who dare....

The Bridges IN Madison County also are About Crossing Over

Crossing Over High Above the River, Mars Hill, MC

Bridges are metaphors for the chances we take to understand our small part in the continuity of life. In Madison County, where streams and pastures and coves abound, you may every day come face to face with the Knowing that in life, on so many levels, we must cross from one place to another-heart, mind, and spirit -move onward to what lies beyond....no matter how high or how wide or how challenging the "crossing " may be....

janeAnne, I did not have the privilege of knowing Laurie though AR. However, tributes such as yours speak volumes.

JaneAnne - Why did I think the Bridges of Madison County were in Wisconsin, instead of North Carolina???  You're right bridges are a symbol of transition. . .I love them!

Myrl, the bridges from the movie are in Madison County, Iowa, I think.  But these beautiful photos of North Carolina bridges make me want to see them, too.

Batten down the hatches, janeAnne!  I grew up in Houston and remember a few hurricanes from my childhood....not fun.  Hope you are all safe when the storm travels on.

janeAnne, there are so many bridges not only in West Virginia, but throughout this world...I love bridges especially the small ones. (one lane-brdges and covered bridges are my favorite)

I enjoyed reading this beautiful, well-written tribute to Laurie Manning, and hit the sujggest button.

JaneAnne -I love bridges and it is always fun to see the ones in other areas.  Without these bridges as a part of the transportation system our travel would be restrictive.  When I think I get get across the Hudson River in minutes.  Without the bridges I probably would not see the other side and I would be missing a lot.
