The signs of fall are showing up all around us: shorter days, falling leaves (yes already in Georgia from dry hot weather) and cooler temperatures (Thanks you mother nature, we have had a really hot summer).
As we prepare for months ahead, landscape is really important to the winter preparation. It is not time to quit mowing yet, in fact in our area, mowing is a 8 month of the year workout process. And with mowing comes lawnmower maintenance. Dont forget to drain the mower at the end of the season, because if you leave the gas in the mower all winter it will get gummy and may prevent start up in the summer 2011.
As temperatures drop and trees mature into the fall months, it is important to rake your lawn regularly so the grass can get sunshine and get water and nutrients. If the layer of leaves is weighted down by leaves you may need to rake on a weekly basis in the fall months.
Cleaning your pond and covering it with chicken wire for the fall months will keep the leaves out of the pump and the pond. Don't forget to drain the garden hoses if the temperatures fall so they will not split. We are aways from freezing temperatures, but as we go into the fall months rainfall is a lot more regular and the hoses are often overlooked until it is too cold to empty them.
Fall and winter can be beautiful in our area of Georgia, get ready for an amazing time of year and plant those pansies for great winter color as they bloom almost all winter here in Georgia. It is amazing what a little color in the landscape can do during the cold winter months when little else is colorful.
