As college football season starts tomorrow, I harken back to a quote I heard from a coach at a press conference. After winning the national championship, he was asked about how he felt about it. I'll paraphrase, but as I remember it was "Life is about what you do tomorrow."
Tiger Woods, despite his, shall we say, challenging last ten months, understood this concept perfectly. Upon winning a major championship several years ago, he was in the gym the next morning at 7 am, to work his weights and cardio. He didn't want to get complacent.
Activerain has set up a system, that is designed to overcome complacency. As real estate professionals, most of us have had a website at one time or another. I've had several, and to be honest, all of them have been stagnant to say the least. I know agents who have spent thousands upon thousands, without a return on their investment. Why is that? There are several things that contribute to web success. One of the biggest factors is changing content and tending to the website, like one would take care of a garden. How many agents do that? The answer- not many at all.
A broker-owner and I were discussing a very succesful agent in our city a few years ago. He told me "She does real well from her website, because she has one of those geeks working on it every week." (For those of you who are tech savvy, don't be offended. In Austin, computer geeks used to have rock star status during the dot com era. It is a compliment around here, but I digress). Most of us don't have a geek on retainer, but it does go to show, that our goal should be to engage in web activity on a consistent basis.
So that leads me to my point. I believe Activerain milestones are a great barometer for not being complacent. There are so many landmarks to set as goals. After 10,000 points, you want 25, then 50, and 100k as a destination. When I started posting in the blog heavy market that I'm in, ranking in the top 50 seemed like a great goal. Now I realize that the top 10 is the only acceptable benchmark, before I take a breath.
Can I write content rich enough, that will someday see me with as many comments received as comments made? That a few posts can be featured? There was a pretty big disparity a month ago. But now I'm closing in. Can I read enough posts, where I can achieve five called shots? Do I even need to mention that first page of Google we desire. As agents, we realize the ultimate result, that not only works with AR, but home sales, your golf game, or winning a championship. You aren't competing against the other person. You are competing against yourself. To be better than you were yesterday. Appreciate the milestones, but realize they can be used as fuel to push yourself further.
And lets not forget about the computer geek in all of us. The true result of milestones isn't the points, or the rankings. It that so you don't have to pay a ton for a website, or pay the computer tech to monitor your web prescence. I'm working with someone to revamp my stagnant website. The idea was to take several months off, and work on my blogging. That way, when I come back to it, I will have something to power it, and drive traffic. Although the website wont be stagnant, the consistent blogging will be the geek working on it every week, or every day in this case.
