A Few Thoughts On Activerain Milestones. Life Is About What You Do Tomorrow

As college football season starts tomorrow, I harken back to a quote I heard from a coach at a press conference. After winning the national championship, he was asked about how he felt about it. I'll paraphrase, but as I remember it was "Life is about what you do tomorrow."

Tiger Woods, despite his, shall we say, challenging last ten months, understood this concept perfectly. Upon winning a major championship several years ago, he was in the gym the next morning at 7 am, to work his weights and cardio. He didn't want to get complacent.

Activerain has set up a system, that is designed to overcome complacency. As real estate professionals, most of us have had a website at one time or another. I've had several, and to be honest, all of them have been stagnant to say the least. I know agents who have spent thousands upon thousands, without a return on their investment. Why is that? There are several things that contribute to web success. One of the biggest factors is changing content and tending to the website, like one would take care of a garden. How many agents do that? The answer- not many at all.

A broker-owner and I were discussing a very succesful agent in our city a few years ago. He told me "She does real well from her website, because she has one of those geeks working on it every week." (For those of you who are tech savvy, don't be offended. In Austin, computer geeks used to have rock star status during the dot com era. It is a compliment around here, but I digress). Most of us don't have a geek on retainer, but it does go to show, that our goal should be to engage in web activity on a consistent basis.

So that leads me to my point. I believe Activerain milestones are a great barometer for not being complacent. There are so many landmarks to set as goals. After 10,000 points, you want 25, then 50, and 100k as a destination. When I started posting in the blog heavy market that I'm in, ranking in the top 50 seemed like a great goal. Now I realize that the top 10 is the only acceptable benchmark, before I take a breath.

Can I write content rich enough,  that will someday see me with as many comments received as comments made? That a few posts can be featured? There was a pretty big disparity a month ago. But now I'm closing in. Can I read enough posts, where I can achieve five called shots? Do I even need to mention that first page of Google we desire. As agents, we realize the ultimate result, that not only works with AR, but home sales, your golf game, or winning a championship. You aren't competing against the other person. You are competing against yourself. To be better than you were yesterday. Appreciate the milestones, but realize they can be used as fuel to push yourself further.

And lets not forget about the computer geek in all of us. The true result of milestones isn't the points, or the rankings. It that so you don't have to pay a ton for a website, or pay the computer tech to monitor your web prescence. I'm working with someone to revamp my stagnant website. The idea was to take several months off, and work on my blogging. That way, when I come back to it, I will have something to power it, and drive traffic. Although the website wont be stagnant, the consistent blogging will be the geek working on it every week, or every day in this case.

Hi Scott,

Interesting...to me it's about making progress vs. perfection in everything, building upon your last efforts.  And you are soooo right about not having to pay a ton for the stuff...being consistant is a big help.

Hi Scott - OK I admit - you got me with "As college football season . . ." My son played for 14 years and was lucky enough to be a starter for D3 Alfred University - he graduated in 2008 - we are still going through withdrawal!

Nice post, you are right - I love the competing against oursleves idea. The milestone I have been trying to get past is the ranking in my county (here on ActiveRain). And I love being a bit of a geek!

Scott, I have had a few days to catch my breath from showing property and contracts so I have turned my attention to catching up with the "geek" stuff and fine tuning some website content.   You make some excellent points.  Marketing is part of the package so we can't neglect it! We all want to be googled and ranked up there for those internet shoppers! Blog posts are a good habit to get into and you are well on your way with writing the good content, I see you were featured again!  Congrats, keep it up!

Scott, points are a great way to keep on track.  Also the point about recieveing as many comments as you give is a great way of making sure your posts are good.

Hi Scott.  Great post.  Yes, you are doing so many things right.  I love reading your posts - I learn something + they are inspiring.  You're content is great and seems like you are increasing readership which is the best compliment of all.

I do think the milestones are important - because they give us each goals to get to the next level.  Ultimately, this activity leads to more links to your site, higher rankings, more leads, more sales, etc.  Points are just an indication, and in general they are well set up here to reward the right activity.  If you think of your ultimate goal and then just use the points as proxies/milestones, I think that's the right approach.

I've been doing something similar to you...been expanding my website and my blogging - to link to my new pages.  It's a gradual process.  Each week I do some more of both.  I had one weekend where I cranked out 19 new webpage.  I figured as soon as I finished those I'd be done.  Wrong.  It just inspired me to realize there were another 5 more topics/pages I can do.  Same thing the next weekend.  I guess it never ends, and that's good.  sorry just a long comment.  at 3 pagagraphs, so need to stop per that post a while back.

Scott:  You're certainly writing feature worthy content on a regular basis.  I too have not spent the time on my website that I should, working on blogging has been a priority.  But I'm ready to get back to my website and give it a shot in the arm.  And what I have learned here on AR will certainly help me to do that.

Karen- Thanks for the call and the comments. I think what these guys at AR do, is smart- create an environment to get subscribers the best bang for their buck.

Charles #7 in the entire state? I'd be glad to have that in my city. Well on your way, and I'm sure its paying dividends

Debbie- I think you said it all with *it never stops*  And it is good, because consistency and not resting is just a fact of life in our business. Wouldn't have it any other way

Tish-Thanks. I think this platform has done more for my online knowledge than any website ever could. It truly is interactive. Which in turn, really does help your website in the long run

Lindsey- It's surprising that Minnesota doesn't have a big AR following. I thought it would be a pretty techie region of the country. Better for you though.
