Lake Pocotopaug

Lake PocotopaugLake Pocotopaug is a popular regional resort area in East Hampton CT, popular for its picturesque scenery and summer cottage area.  The area is held in high regard because although it is a short drive from Hartford, it seems like it is a world away from the congestion and density of central Connecticut.  Some of the lake's most noticeable locations, are the two islands that at its center, that have cozy little summer cottages that can be rented.

Lake Pocotopaug has a rich history that can be traced back to its original Native American inhabitants.  The name Lake Pocotopaug means "lake with pierced islands" in Pequot.  Lore has it that the Pequot tribes that first inhabited the area felt that they were being cursed by one of their great spirits.  The chief agreed to appease the spirit by giving it his daughter. She willingly threw herself into the lake and drowned.  Apparently the curse was lifted, and the Indians lived in peace, until the land was subsequently settled by Europeans.

Today, Lake Pocotopaug is known as the largest inland body of water in Connecticut, at 512 acres.  There is a park at the lake which contains various activities for vacationers, from swimming, fishing and boating, to other recreations.  Many Lake Pocotopaug residents are fortunate enough to actually one of its waterside homes, and enjoy the pristine beauty year round. Whether looking for a place to rent for the summer, or looking to stay permanently, Lake Pocotopaug will make for a peaceful, scenic and tranquil alternative to the surrounding towns around central Connecticut.

Oh wow! Does your post on Lake Pocotopaug bring early childhood memories for me as I grew up in Connecticut. I learned to swim and fish in this lake and it is wonderful to know more of its history now. It was my favorite place to go on Sunday's with my parents and aunts and uncles. Thank you!
