It's hard to believe that SHARKS were CAUGHT IN WATERS OFF ST MARY'S COUNTY MD!!

SHARKS CAUGHT IN WATERS OFF ST MARY'S MD

I just had to blog this because if you know Southern Maryland, and St Mary's County, you might think CRABS but  you definitely don't think sharks!  Southern Maryland has a lot of different water access through creeks, rivers and bays.  Some areas are for boating, some for fishing, crabbing and oysters, and some for swimming.  Most are very beautiful and relaxing.  Earlier this summer I was surprised to hear of dolphin swimming in Breton Bay.  I wished I had seen them.

How amazing is it then that two SHARKS have been CAUGHT IN WATERS OFF ST MARY'S COUNTY MD in the last two days!  September 3, correction:  both sharks were caught on Wednesday.

The first was caught September 1, 2010, in waters off Scotland, Maryland.  It was a bull shark and was 8 feet long.  The second was caught farther up the Potomac River, off Tall Timbers.  I don't know what type, but to me a shark is a shark!!  It measured 10 feet in length.  Now I'm not too knowledgeable about sharks, as you can probably tell, but to me that's BIG!!  Another September 3 correction:  It would appear  that initially there was slight exaggeration about the length of the second shark, it too was around 8 feet in length.  However, I still think that is big!

The fishermen are pound-net fishermen.  A  pound net is a long underwater enclosure that traps fish.  The net is then hauled up to the surface and the fish are brought on board the boat.  I can only imagine the surprise of the two fisherman on Wednesday.

Thanks for letting me share all about the SHARKS CAUGHT IN WATERS OFF ST  MARY'S COUNTY MD.

Please don't let this put you off living in St Mary's County MD, it's a great place to live and now it's just a little more exciting too!!

What an amazing picture. I would have never thought MD would have shark's of their coast.

Great photos. I love to go fishing-- You are right these are BIG!  Not to sure it is what you want in your "backyard".  But they are amazing!

What is your source for the report of the second shark caught near Tall Timbers?  You are the only one reporting a second shark was caught.

We would never have thought there were shark's off the coast either. The story is that the hurricane off the coast may have driven them into our waters? I don't know, but I'm thinking not so much swimming in our waters for a while!

Hi Margaret ~ Yikes I saw this too and I love to fish.. If there is one and now two, they come in swarms. I saw Dolphins last year in Lusby on The Bay & in St. Leonard Creek. Humm. maybe the water table is changing?

HiMonique,  Maybe the salinity of the water has changed due to lack of rain allowing the fish to venture further inland.  Margaret C.
