It's hard to believe that SHARKS were CAUGHT IN WATERS OFF ST MARY'S COUNTY MD!!
I just had to blog this because if you know Southern Maryland, and St Mary's County, you might think CRABS but you definitely don't think sharks! Southern Maryland has a lot of different water access through creeks, rivers and bays. Some areas are for boating, some for fishing, crabbing and oysters, and some for swimming. Most are very beautiful and relaxing. Earlier this summer I was surprised to hear of dolphin swimming in Breton Bay. I wished I had seen them.
How amazing is it then that two SHARKS have been CAUGHT IN WATERS OFF ST MARY'S COUNTY MD in the last two days! September 3, correction: both sharks were caught on Wednesday.
The first was caught September 1, 2010, in waters off Scotland, Maryland. It was a bull shark and was 8 feet long. The second was caught farther up the Potomac River, off Tall Timbers. I don't know what type, but to me a shark is a shark!! It measured 10 feet in length. Now I'm not too knowledgeable about sharks, as you can probably tell, but to me that's BIG!! Another September 3 correction: It would appear that initially there was slight exaggeration about the length of the second shark, it too was around 8 feet in length. However, I still think that is big!
The fishermen are pound-net fishermen. A pound net is a long underwater enclosure that traps fish. The net is then hauled up to the surface and the fish are brought on board the boat. I can only imagine the surprise of the two fisherman on Wednesday.
Thanks for letting me share all about the SHARKS CAUGHT IN WATERS OFF ST MARY'S COUNTY MD.
