Years ago I worked with a guy named Ken, who in the middle of summer, had a wool jacket on the front seat of his car. I asked him why he had it on a hot day like this, and his response was, "If you don't like the weather in Minnesota, just wait, it'll change." He was right of course.
I have lived in the St. Cloud area for 45 years, and it is very moderate here, but we do see some extreme weather. Most notably, we seem to be on the same system as the Dakotas, where the wind blows hard and the thunderstorms mature and grow. In the summer we get alot from the southwest (South Dakota), and in the winter from the northwest (North Dakota). Most summers here are pretty nice, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s in daytime, and cooler at night. Our central air is on for maybe 10-15 days in the average summer. This summer has been marked by more hot days and nights, together with alot of rain, and some wild winds. So far this summer we have had a few calls for trees down on our listings. One from the St. Cloud Police at 10:30pm to say the tree is in the street, and can we get that moved, and the last one where our Sellers property had 12 trees downed.
It stormed again last night with great rain and baby hail, and again this afternoon, while I was at City Hall. Everyone had an umbrella. They've learned to be prepared. One lady said, "Well, at least I don't have to water the lawn." We have had a wonderful growing season with a frequent natural watering of the lawn and gardens. As a result we have had a bumper crop of tomatoes and peppers, and ground cherries, and more. Warm days and cool nights with plenty of rain.
Now is canning season, and fall is around the corner. Fall is the best season here. Think football, your favorite jacket, the trees changing colors, and hunting. Molly (our Springer) will be watching me for signs it is time for dog and man to go to the woods. In late fall we change the clocks, put fresh batteries in the smoke detectors, and put jumper cables and snow shovels in the cars. Here in St. Cloud we can get snow as early as Halloween, and as late as April Fools Day, but usually it's December through March with a bit of very cold weather in the middle. Liz (the wife & webmistress) likes to stay inside and catch up on projects, read, and stay warm. If you have to go out in the colder weather a good hat, gloves and boots will help keep you safe and warm. Mostly winter in St. Cloud is a clean, whiter, quieter time. Good for ice fishing, crosscountry skiing, and snowmobiling. Our winters are also the perfect excuse to stock up on clothing, after all they are a necessity in our wonderful climate.
