Jessica's Murderer, John Couey Gets Death Penalty

Hopefully the Lunsford family can sleep a little easier tonight.

The judge just gave John Couey, the man that buried little Jessica Lunsford alive the death penalty.

I wonder, how long will he sit on Death Row.

How long does it take the state of Florida to put a sentenced person to death?

Why do murders get an appeals process?

The person they murdered didn't get to make any appeals.

Little Jessie was told she was going home, instead she was put into a hole after being bound and placed into garbage bags. No appeals, no nothing, but a stuffed dolphin and darkness.

Cases like this are great reasons for the death penalty.  The sad part is the tax payers will spend a fortune on the murderer.

Randy, That is why Steve and I question the appeals process. Why should we foot the bill. He admitted the crime, he should die swiftly.

Matt, unfortunatley they've been keeping him in solitary and that is where he will most likely stay. Trust me, there are a lot of people inside those walls that would love to have a go at him. It would sure save us some money if they (the officials) let that happen.

Lysa, This entire story is just heartbeaking. I was very pleased withe sentencing but it sure doesn't bring Jessica back. Very sad.

The second shows the new electric chair that was built in 1998, it replaced "Ol' Sparky" which was built in 1923 and was laid-off from 1964 to 1979.  The inmates on deathrow now have the choice of lethal injection or the electric chair.  Is justice ever fully served, one day we'll all know that answer.

Lysa - little Jessica Lunsford never got to live her life.  I'm sorry if this sounds crass or cold ---- but this heathen should not live another day.  If he was put to death in the next 5 minutes he has still lived way too long.  This type of thing just breaks my heart.

Lysa - So very sad!  I always think they should have a sentence that is and eye for an eye!  Bury this killer they way he did his victim!

BB, You're right, it doesn't bring Jessie back.. but Mark was definatley relieved yesterday when the sentance was handed down. Justice is almost served.

Kevin, Thanks for the sites. I was asking folks last night who have lived here awhile about this. I know some states really drag their feet when it comes to execution.

Carol, you do not sound crass to me. He took Jessie's life and innocence at the tender age of 9, I wish he never made it this far in jail.

Ines, In talking with Mark last spring, I know it will help ease some of his pain. I doubt he will ever have full closure though.

Kim, If you go to this post A Trip To Leesburg Bike Fest & Mark Lunsfordyou will see on the back of "Jessie's Ride" it says Eye 4 An Eye. I've always thought that was appropriate myself. Especially when it comes to child killers.

The story had a terrible ending and those on the police offenders list do not like being watched but their behavior put themselves there, and we are not going to take our eyes off them.  His sentence was very kind considering it takes years to finalize the verdict.  Nice post.
