Can you create the "context"-----that will allow you to see the whole picture?

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

The “Devil is in the Details” as they say.  I am not really sure what that means----but for this Seattle Home Inspector it sure helps to be able to understand “details.”  It can make the difference between whether a problem “jumps out at me” aSometimes things are as they appear----sometimes nott the inspection, or whether it occurs to me on the ride home.  Sometimes the details don’t become apparent until I see it in a different way looking at the photos of the inspection later in the comfort of my office----with KEXP playing in the background.

I started thinking about this while I was looking at the picture on the left-----and its beautiful details-----of colors and shapes.  Sometimes we can see the details, but without "context," we might just be guessing unless we have "experience" to create a context----or until we see the whole picture.

Can you tell me what it is?

Hi Charles,  at first I thought it looked like a spider web but thenI thought, no, it's an insect wing.

Hi Charles--So glad you can't see how ridiculous you have made me look trying to figure this out---turning my head from side to side, upside down, standing on the other side of the room to see the picture from a different perspective.......A deteriorating leaf?? If I get a second guess, netting to contain insulation?  (Trying to see this from a home inspector's point of view)

It reminds me of the meshy stuff that holds some produce from the grocery store - though doesn't seem like the right color...

Mr Charles,

That is oh so easy. If I was not bareback riding, I would answer the question.

Nutsy

I can't imagine it would be something so ethereal as an insect wing from an inspection photo.  It is something more prosaic.  Maybe netting over the crawl space under a house?  But it looks too flimsy.

Great visualization and challenge to make your point.  I love it.  Reminds me of A Beautiful Mind and how they brought the viewer through the experience itself.  Very clever.  My hats off to you.

Wow, awesome.  It's beautiful and I would have had to go with some sort of netting.

That's a very large dragon fly wing being held in front of a musk ox eye as he peers through the view finder of the camera.

Nailed it.

Charles, So true about details.  It is interesting how our minds work coming up with details later.  Your post reminds me of the old story of the blind men and the elephant and truth.

Have never seen a red dragonfly.  Thanks! Great photo!
