2007 Nominee: Most Misleading Telemarketing Call

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Austin Referral Realty

Having your websites found through the search engines is great. However, if buyers and sellers can easily find you, so can telemarketers from internet marketing companies. These companies are online marketing companies. Did you read that correctly? Online marketing! If they are so wonderful, they would probably use their epic marketing skills to find you online. Or better yet, you would find them. I'm immune to these hacks and now, instead of hanging up on them, I just play along and act like I don't have a clue.

I just received a phone call from http://www.netbiz.com
A very nice young lady just called me and asked if I was still in real estate. I confirmed that I was and here's how the conversation played out....

NetBiz Girl: Great, I work for Google and we are looking to promote one Realtor in the Austin area. Are you interested in participating?
Me: You work for Google? How's the weather in Mountain View, Cali?
NetBiz Girl: Well, actually I live in Oregon.
Me: But your checks have a Mountain View address, right?
NetBiz Girl: No, I actually get paid by NetBiz, but we work with Google. We own the page and top spot for Austin Real Estate on the Google search results.
Me: Really? That's awesome! How can I buy a Google page? Am I going to be promoted on your page for Austin Real Estate?
NetBiz Girl: *smelling blood* We are only looking to promote one agent for our "Austin Real Estate" page. For only $700, you can be #1 in the sponsored links for "austin real estate!"
Me: I've heard of that before, you pay per visitor and pay a fee, right?
NetBiz Girl: You're talking about pay per click. No, this is different. We guarantee you the #1 position b/c we own it and you just pay a flat monthly fee.
Me: So do you guarantee me visitors?
NetBiz girl: No, there's no way to find out how many visitors search for your keyword or click your link, but my co-workers at Google say "Austin Real Estate" is a highly searched keyword.
Me: Please tell me again, how does a company go about buying a page from Google? You work for them so you must have the inside scoop. If Google is selling keyword pages, do you think that will undermine Google's main revenue stream which is Google AdWords?
NetBiz Girl: Um, um, well, we just buy the page and offer it to Realtors.
Me: You're checks are not signed by Larry Page and Sergie Brin, are they?
NetBiz Girl: What? Who's Larry?

Who's Larry? Classic! You can't make this stuff up people! She never did tell me how they go about buying pages or how Google was compensated. This conversation when on and on. She finally got frustrated, told me to have a nice day, and hung up. Did she really mean for me to have a nice day? I'd like to think so :)

I just kept asking her questions that her objection handling script did not cover. Lies, lies, tell me sweet little lies...... her a few facts for the record...

  1. She does not work for Google, just a hack company buying keywords on Google and reselling them to naive Realtors at a inflated price.
  2. Google makes money selling keywords and keyword phrases. If Google's customers got wind of them selling guaranteed #1 positions (or pages as NetBiz Girl would put it), Google's stock price would drop to single digits after the next earnings report.
  3. Netbiz is a ethically and morally changelled company. So all you suckers out there looking for the "Golden Ticket:" YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

It's not only NetBiz, there are hundreds of thousands of companies who use the telephone to sell you "out of this world" online marketing campaigns. Never, ever buy anything from a telemarketer claiming to boost your rankings, guarantee you a position, or promote your website in any way. Infective at the least, flat out unethical at worst (NetBiz). If you sign up, they'll cash your check the same!

The best companies out there, such as realestatewebmasters.com, never make cold calls. They are too busy driving traffic to their clients sites and handling tons of referral business.

NetBiz is a joke!  They scam Realtors out of hard-earned money and offer nothing in return.

If you are so proud of NetBiz, why did you not leave your name on your comment?  Which real estate market do you operate?  If I had to guess, you have an interest in NetBiz.  Show everyone at AR some stats and we'll shut up!  Until then, you just made NetBiz look slimier by posting a weak rebuttal with absolutely nothing to back it up.

Hi I saw your post while doing some research on Netbiz.com.  I am currently using a company called IPAssociates with good results.  I have very small amount of money to use for advertising but this guy named Kelly has really helped me a lot  to get placement  and a lot of hits to my website and raise my sales.  I raise teacup poodles .  Very small .  I got a call from netbiz and was wondering about them. Just wanted to let you know that this one really is good and Kelly is very honest, does what he says he will do.  Good luck, I hope you contact Kelly and he will help you get business for you site. his email is kelly@ipassociatesllc.com.  I think I wrote that down right.  for some reason it won't let me copy and pase stuff on here. phone is 888-417-4193, I also have another number  it might be his cell 503-946-5876.  Give him  a try.  My email is smallwood449@yahoo.com if you want to contact me  Just type in ipassociates and it will come up .  Good luck, Shirley Smallwood

I think that your tactic is funny as well, unfortunetly you most likely had a new girl call you or something that doesn't know what they're talking about.  NetBiz is a good company, believe me I grilled them as well, but got someone on the phone that knows what they're talking about.  They are basically reselling google adwords -exact match.  But they will keep you on the first page guaranteed.  They put that in writing.  The don't sell a page or sell the #1 spot?  Even though I happen to always be #1.  Yes you could go to Google Adwords and do something yourself, who cares?  You can most likely change your oil yourself too, but I'd rather spend more money and have someone do it for me.  You may pay a slightly higher price, but I never have to worry about checking into my adwords account and bidding over the next person, it's a headache to me..... I don't have time for that.  That's what I pay them to do.  NetBiz has worked for me.  I've had my best year yet with my vacation rental property and I've had it for 20 years.  NetBiz is the only thing I did different.

I just got the same call moments ago, from Service Something or other, offering top billing for "seattle wedding photographer" results.  I rarely get telemarketer calls on my cell, even though it's my listed business number so I listened thinking there had to be a blog post out there debunking this lady.  Thank you!

Hi ,

I found this post while researching on telemarketing leads. The initial blog by ronnie was quite interesting. And then you have a client from netbiz and a employer from netbiz ...defending its pricing and product solution.

I do seo and sem myself ,but my question is why would a company charge 700 usd per month for managing a single keyword. Its not that they are charging high or low but then how come anybody quotes a figure of 700usd for keyword phrase.

How it works in adwords is ---- you pay per click ,so what it means here is netbiz charges for 700 usd worth clicks or lets say 350 usd for click and 350 for its management services.

The keyword "Austin Real Estate" as a bid value of ranges from 2-3 usd for 1-3 positions and for

"home inspections in myrtle beach" it is 0.05 cents.

so does it mean netbiz guarantees 350/2 = 175 clicks minimum in a month.....and again out of this 175 clicks how many of them are relevant to your services......how do they minimize click fraud......

the way i do is charge around 200 usd per month for my services and then work wid the clients on all long tail keywords and setup up their adwords campaign.

i work mostly on loan modification seo and sem nationwide.

you can check mkscope.com/loanmodification_seo.html

thanx

sudip

To: "I Work For netbiz.com"

I find it interesting that you were only mostly truthful in your post.  Why not be entirely truthful?

"We don't have a contract, so you're not locked into a "scam""

Netbiz.com DOES HAVE A CONTRACT.  I am holding it in my hands right now.  They sent it to one of my clients (I do SEP as well). Why lie?

"The sales reps don't actually do the placement. There is a department, where people come in earlier than 7am, and stay later then 5pm. All they do is manage accounts. So your rep PROBABLY really does not know the technicalities of it."

Not true... I have a friend who used to work for you guys.  The sales reps DO in fact do the posting and updating.  Unless you changed something.  I always figured that's why some people I have worked with had good experiences with NetBiz but most of them had bad experiences- because the level of service provided by the individuals doing the posting and updating differs.  Why Lie?

"$50 is the minimum Google will do, and normally there is a bare minimum of searches"

THAT IS NOT TRUE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM!!!  I have been on both sides of the table, individual advertiser and advertising agency, and there is NO minimum fee and NO minimum number of keywords to post in AdWords.  Why Lie?

"Our retention rate is extremely high, and for those few people who cancel, it is 99% likely, that they didn't actually listen to what they were being offered, they are expecting a whale for a penny, or they retired."

Did you know that 67.84320056789% of all statistics are made up on the spot?

I hope your boss knows what kind of misinformation you are making them liable for.

Why Lie?

I got the call from NetBiz last night. For ony $125 per month they offered me Austin Texas Homes or a steal of a deal for $50 for Austin Texas home. He promised I would get at least 90 visitors to my website each month. I took a pass as I remembered your blog. I am sick to death of people using my marketing efforts to sell me some drivel. There has to be an end to the telemarketers. Argggghhhhhh......

Wow, what heated comments.  Well, I am new to NetBiz.com as a client, I'll let you know how it goes.  I am thinking that without a contract or a minimum number of months, they are the ones who must prove themselves.

Alright, everyone breathe...

Confession: I'm an employee of netbiz. I work for an hourly wage, which it ten dollars. Sometimes i get commissions, mostly i dont. People leave here nearly as fast as they come. Im not google and i have never talked to a google employee. We are basically a telemarketing company and thats all we do is dial all day. You may get lucky and get a sales rep who is smart and honest but there arent many of them here at all. I just call on people and read the scripts they give me and try to make a living. The most popular activity at the office is smoking on breaks.

Look, you guys are right. We tell you pretty much anything to get your credit card number. Hopefully, you'll get a lead or two and we'll all be happy right? :-)

:-) Wow. I have been doing just that! Ugh.

Thanks to everyone (except the obvious company mouthpiece smattered here and there) for the warnings.

I signed up with Netbiz.com just two weeks ago, since then I've been clicked on 78 times, with a 30% conversion rate. Not too much to say here, I figured it doesn't hurt to try it, especially with no contract.

I say it works, and I think it's disgraceful that you are all slandering a company with no direct relationship to them. Not only that, wasting your time blogging about it? Grow up people.

* BTW - They do NOT have a contract. The only thing I've had to sign was a contact authorization form to designate my husband as a secondary contact on my account.

Yeah I worked at NetBiz. Its a joke, they say they can do all this for you and its true, they will put you on the front page of a specific search term, but.... it may only be a search that has on average1-2 clicks per day. yeah you might as well stand on a street corner with a sign in your hand dancing to your IPOD for marketing.  In the office they are always talking about how they arent telemarketers... BS.... those sales reps are making 65% commisions on each purchase, you wonder why they sell you at all cost. I worked there for a week and saw it for what it really was... quick bux with no concern for true success of the customers...  Dont get me wrong, there are some great people that work there, it's too bad they are waisting their time there.  remember anytime they come at you with a search term that is less than 800 dollars its not worth it.... they use google adwords for their prices and then inflate them by 30%...hmmm my advice, get your own adwords account and do it yourself.  Google qualified company?  there are 5 people at the corporate office that are certified adwords users.....hmmm i wish it wasn't grosssly over exagerated...  Lastly, remember they promise first page placement on  your search in the sponsored links.  Fact is 99% of consumers click on organic links, i never even considered clicking a sponsored link prior to working there.

Quote from last post: there are 5 people at the corporate office that are certified adwords users..

Now I know whey Net Biz violates the Google rule when they post their google qualified sign on thier site without the total number of certified folks on board.... they have only 5 out of thousands of employees... I would violate the google rule to cause it would suck to place the number 5 for the number of qualified folks.. handling thousands and thousands of realtors account.

I love showing this to people! I am the Netbiz Girl...even though I don't work there anymore...but this call was when I first started calling for PPC management and didn't know jack ...almost ten years later I am still cold calling Realtors daily biggest difference now though is I know Google's policies!

No matter who calls you about Google "Placement" they are running Ad Words, unless it is SEO, "flat Rate" is just a guesstimate on what the cost would be to keep you where you should be all month long...it is based on last years numbers which is why it is a guesstimate.

At this point focus should be on transparency...you have a right to know how much of your monthly spend is put towards your ads and how much is put into the companies management fee...if they say there is no management fee it would be like you saying you don't earn commission on the homes you sell.

I still feel like I should have gotten some sort of plaque for this lol Come on Ronnie haven't I proven myself to you yet! :)
