There are two towns in St. Croix, Christiansted and Frederiksted. Christiansted is by far the largest, with several thriving shops and restaurants and an active boardwalk right on the water. Hotel on the Cay is a hotel on a small island in the mouth of the harbor, with watersports activities, a weekly barbeque and entertainment, and a lovely beach. The Brew Pub is on the boardwalk, as is Rum Runners - both nice restaurants that stay busy. There are several art galleries in Christiansted and local jewelry stores with the famous "Cruzan Bracelets" and other local delights. While you'd hardly call it a "bustling town" - it is certainly alive and well. It is on the north shore, and located just slightly on the eastern side of the island.
Christiansted and Frederiksted, St. Croix
Frederiksted is on the west end of the island, and is a much more laid back place. Millions have recently been spent refurbishing the water-side street (Strand St.) and pier - and it looks great. However, it still feels like a sleepy little town and the merchants there seem to be struggling. There are some great watering holes there - and good restaurants - and in my opinion - the best beaches on the island. Once a month, there's Jazz in the park there, and the whole town comes alive for that. It is a very fun evening and not to be missed if you are a local.
On Sunday afternoons, the beaches are dotted with local families - and sometimes horses!! (Many of the locals train their race horses in the water there). The water is USUALLY calm and fairly wave free - and clear as gin. My absolute favorite thing to do on a Sunday (or any day that I have free) is to park myself on a float with a cool adult beverage and soak in some rays and watch the children play on the beach.
The Blue Moon has a jazz brunch on Sundays, and the brunch at Sand Castles is fabulous as well. Sundays are great in Frederiksted.
Now, in the not too distant future, I think Frederiksted is going to change completely. There is a new development coming - and I do believe that will drive up prices and change the complexion of this town. That makes me sad in a way - because it has such a timeless charm about it - to me - but economically speaking - it could use a boost.
Come experience the difference in these two towns!
I'll be glad to give you a guided tour of both and discuss real estate investment opportunities.
