4 Days Without a Cell Phone?

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Heritage Homes PB00007070

Yes you read the title correct this is my 4th day with out a cell phone!!  It's hard to believe but I have survived  This past Friday the Sims Card in in Blackberry went bad and I had to make a decession.  My wife and our 2 dogs Kris and Nick had made it to our Lake House on Wednesday Evening and we had been relaxing and getting ready to 3 other couples over for Ribs and all the Fixins' on Friday night.  After spending some time on line and making a phone call from the "Land Line" we found out the closest place to replace the Sims Card was an hour each way plus I'm sure and hour at the story.  Lesia said come on and I'm go with you.  I set back had a drink of coffee and said it's ok I'll Just Do Without My Cell Phone Until Tuesday!!  I thought she was going to pass out!!

I forgot about the phone and got ready for our compamy and never one time missed that phone on Friday!!  Here's what I discovered:

  • In the age of everyone needing instant responds:  It's Ok to Take Off and Leave the phone off!!
  • I think we put to much pressure on ourselves to be available 24/7
  • Our Agents and Clients Can do without us for a Couple of Days
  • We Just simply are not that important!
  • If I missed A Sale it's Ok.  I needed the rest.  The Black circles are gone!! Well almost!
  • We had a peaceful 4 day get away without answering the phone the whole time!!
  • It's important to turn it off for a while and just relax and get the batteries recharged
  • I did not Miss the Phone Ringing!  Try it Sometime!

Now here's what I hope and I can do the Next Time we come to the Lake which by the why is the 1st weekend in October.  We all stay so busy!

  • I want us both to turn the phones off!!
  • Leave the computer at Home and that means no EMAIL or ACTIVE RAIN

Here all I have to do to make that Successful:

  • Change my voice mail at the office and ask them to call a team member
  • Be sure to change the Voice Mail on the Cell phone
  • Set up auto responder on my email.

Sounds so simple now be sure to Check Out the Rest of the Story in October and Lets see If I can Do It!

Have a Great Labor Day!

Michael,

I feel your pain as I too have been having cell phone issues. After years of fantastic service from AT&T in a blink of an eye I had no service at my home office. After two and a half weeks of frustration I am making the change to Verizon. Gone is my beloved iPhone and I will not be using a Droid!

Now just email yourself this to do list to yourself before you go away and make it happen.

You will be glad you did.

And those Black circles just might disappear lol

Enjoy the day

It is possible to get away without the phone...but hard to make our selves do it!    I think the most impoertant thing to do is to find a great back up agent!

My Husband lives out of state right now....whenever I go to visit him I am able to give my clients good coverage with another agent!  I do teh same for that agent during hunting season....because my hubby works nights I work during the day....but turn the phone off when hubby gets up...it can work...and I think clients respect that we need a day off!

Good Luck!

Lots of places like the lake don't have any cell service anyhow so you may not have been able to use it!  But maybe that's just in our neck of the woods and rivers.

Barbara my card was out but it was wonderful not having a Cell Phone.  Somedays I wish I could go back and not be caring it around all the time.

I think it is a great idea...we all need to unplug from the matrix sometimes, especially on vacation.

I left my phone at home one long day without being able to get back to get it. I thought I was going to have a stroke. For me, it's more relaxing having it and not worrying about what I'm missing.

More power to you though!

John I agree sometimes you just have to turn it off.

Julia you should living without the phone for a couple of days the next time you want to take off.  It is wonderful.  And Guess what you customers and clients are ok as long as you tell them!!  People don't except us to work 24 hour a day 7 days a week.  We just tell them we do that!

Michael - There is nothing that will put me out of sorts swifter than having some major component of technology taken away.  I went through a bit of that last month, when I had some computer problems that needed to be sorted out.  I felt like I had been reborn when it was all fixed, but still a tad ansy from the experience.

Mryl I do understand but it was nice not having the cell phone ring all weekend.  I did have my computer and a Land Line!

It is truly restful not feeling like you have to be at everyone's beck and call. I shut off my phone every Friday night and don't turn it on until Saturday night. I put it out of my mind completely. Everyone and everything will survive without me. I do agree though, it's important to put a message on your voicemail...have to learn how to do that on my brand new phone!
