The Mayor's Hike and Bike in Louisville, KY today was a Great Ride

OK, so I did my first Mayor's Hike and Bike Ride of about 15 miles on Memorial Day, 2010, and I think that got me hooked on biking. But boy, I tried to resist it for so long.  My husband, Mike, has been riding with a group of dedicated bikers for more than a couple of years and he has hounded me to get out there with him for so long.  But when I found out that my sister-in-law and her husband were going, I figured I had to be as healthy as they were, so I did it.

We decided to join a small group that met at a friend's house in St. Matthews and ride downtown from there.  After getting down to Waterfront Park, we joined the Mayor's Ride that left from Waterfront Park in Louisville to Shawnee Park and back, nearly 15 miles.  There was an optional extra 3 miles if you took a trip across the 2nd Street Bridge to Hoosierland which we opted against.  There was such a crowed, we figured if we went on to the park and skipped the bridge trek, we would break away from the pack and have an easier ride of it.  Good choice. As I was already tuckered out from the brisk ride from St. Matthews, I needed some smooth sailing and less stress than riding with a few thousand people.  After getting finished with that ride, we headout of town via Mellwood to Frankfort Avenue and stopped for some lunch at Molly Malone's in St. Matthews.  Turns out, we went about 30 miles

So from the start I had in May of what I thought then was a tough 15 minute ride, I have now worked myself up to being able to handle a 30 mile ride--all pretty flat of course.  But I do think I have the confidence to do the 2010 Harvest Homecoming Bicycle Tour in Starlight, Indiana on October 3.  You can learn more about it from the Southern Indiana Wheelmen through their website at www.siwheelmen.org/harvest.htm. (If you are at work - turn down the sound as they have some crazy music playing at the site!) I am of the understanding that the Harvest Homecoming Ride has a lot of hills, but the incentive is a sausage and pancake breakfast from Chris Cakes of Indiana at the start and lunch at the end from Papa John's Pizza.

If there is food, I am there!  Think about joining me on this ride, where you can chose from scenic routes of 5, 25, 40 or 65 miles, or go check out the Louisville Metro Government Bike Site to see what else is happening in the Louisville biking scene.  If you are interested in the Harvest Homecoming Ride, you can chose from scenic routes of 5, 25, 40 or 65 miles.  Have a safe and happy ride!
