Today was the last Portland Beavers Baseball Game in Portland… We will miss you, I hope we proved that!

Today was the last Portland Beavers Game in Portland. They have been kicked out of their own stadium for Major League Soccer. It was a great game and I think the fans that showed up this weekend proved it! The Beaver’s store sold out of everything they had, and the fans didn’t leave after the game. They stuck around and just applauded the team, the announcers and the manager for a good 15 minutes after the game.

I have to admit the only reason we left at that point is we wanted to get back to our car so we could hear the announcer do his show on the game. I’m so glad we did! When we got to the car, we heard the announcer tell us he was going to talk about his career with the Beavers and that he was not going to cry.

Well, I’m not sure he made it! We started to hear him get choked up when he talked about his wife and family and how supportive they were. He talked about his mom and dad and how they made him the man he is and that he was so glad his dad got to hear him announce his first major league baseball game in San Diego last year before he passed away.

It was touching final game and they gave a lot of great things away. The only thing they didn’t give away, that I wished they would have, was the old pictures that were around the stadium. There were pictures of the stadium through the years and even from the old Vaughn Street Stadium in northwest Portland.

The one thing I am disappointed about today's game is that the great Johnny Pesky of Boston Red Sox fame, that I found out about visiting the Silverton Historical Museum, was on hand and I didn't get to meet him, and after reading a great book by Bill Nowlin, it  disappointed me even more. (He is one of the baseball greats!!!)

It was hard to see the fact they had already started construction on the stadium to convert it to a Major League Soccer stadium before the last game was even finished, but we are grateful for the team that gave us such joy over the years. Thanks once again for another wonderful season. I’m sorry it had to be your last here and congratulations on going out on a win!

My sympathies to you Todd.  I know you loved that team and have been a real loyal fan of them in that stadium.  Your many posts have demonstrated that.

I am 49 years old. I went back home (small town called LeRoy New York) to see where I grew up (hadn't seen the place in 30 years); one of the must see places was the little league park where I still recall hitting my first homer. Baseball parks are loaded with wonderful memories. Hats off to all the Portland Beavers and their fans.

I'm so sorry you have to say goodbye to the Beavers, Todd. At least you were able to enjoy one last game with a stadium full of fans. And a win!

Todd - A number of year's back, I lived in a town that lost our AAA team so I understand what a sad time it is.  At the time, it was the only pro sports team in the state so it was definetly hard for us.  I'm glad you got to go out today and say goodbye the right way.

Todd, years back, we had the Pirates AA affiliates here in Waterbury. It's where Bobby Bonds started his career, along with so many of the Pirates players of the early 60's. When they left, a large void was created, but even to this day, Bonds remembers his start and comes back annually for a golf tournament bearing his name benefiting the youth baseball teams in the area.

Todd,

Minor League baseball is probably more important at the local level than the pro teams - more of them. Are they going to find a new home? :)

Steve as of last night, they still hadn't found a home. But they are talking about being sold and possibly moving to Southern California.

This is the best hyper-local post I have ever seen! Thanks for sharing this, Todd. I have been to a few games at PGE (Multnomah and Civic Stadium back then) when I was a kid. It was a rickety old place to be sure, but to me it holds the same special place in my heart that I am sure Wrigley holds for Cubs fans and the Green Monster holds for Sox fans.

I moved from the area when I was 19, and haven't been back to Portland for a visit since 2007.

Todd: I thought the owners of the team owned the stadium?

Aaron and that is where the big con on the public happened. The owner of the soccer team bought the base team and the stadium and pushed out the baseball team in support of MLS soccer. So, now we are stuck with MLS and no baseball and he blames the politicians for not building a new stadium.

Todd,

It seems the city or the former owner - or both - erred for not putting a clause in the sales contract about not moving or displacing the team. :)
