Stuart, FL - History of Willoughby Golf Club, A Looking Glass into the Private Gated Golf Communities on the Treasure Coast -Part 3.

One early resident of Martin County was a prominent sportsman, adventurer, and member of the New York Yacht Club, Captain Hugh de Laussat Willoughby, for whom Willoughby Golf Club was named.  He explored the Everglades assisted by Orville Wright in his first flight and discovered Stuart and Martin County's lifestyle back in 1908. The Willoughby property had been owned by The Sewall's Point Land Company formed by Henry Sewall and Hugh Willoughby.

In the mid 1980's the Willoughby property was now owned by the Florida Real Estate subsidiary of Bessemer Securities.  In February of 1988, construction of Willoughby Golf Club began.  Developed by E. Speer & Associates in conjunction with Radnor Corporation, over 70 acres of lakes and preserves were set aside to protect the Ospreys, Egrets, and Sand Hill Cranes native to this site.  A masterful golf course was designed by Arthur Hills.  On February 1 of 1989, the front nine of the golf course was opened, and in March of the same year, a grand opening was staged for the community.

Today, the Willoughby Golf Club Community consists of Estate and Neighborhood homes, totally 375 single family homes on 403 acres.  Willoughby Golf Club's lifestyle offers a beautiful golf course, tennis courts, lap-lane pool and fitness center. Its spacious clubhouse has several dining venues, hosts many charitable events and offers a variety of indoor and outdoor activities and 24 hour security. All this combined with a community of energetic caring members has made Willoughby "one of the best places to live in Florida" according to Links Magazine.
