Social Media/Technology VS. MANKIND???????? Wait....What?????

SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE NEW WAY...or SOCIAL MEDIA TAKES HUMAN CONNECTION AWAY??

THAT IS THE REAL QUESTION!

  PLEASE HELP ME ANSWER IT.

All I keep hearing now is "Social Media this....", "Social Media that...". "Tecnology this...", "Technology that..." Okay, great, but....where did the open houses go??? Where did the personal phone calls go, the personal meetings...you get the picture.

Look, Im all for what the internet has to offer. It enables us to "get the word out" in the blink of an eye, make more connections than we would normally ever be able to make (and at lightning speed), and yes, perhaps even pick up a new client here and there. Technology...wow, has that come a LONG WAY!! Who really even needs an office or even a PC anymore when we have smart phones??? Again, dont misunderstand, there is alot to be said for the convenience we have now at our finger tips.

THE PROBLEM IS, whatever happened to everything in moderation???? So many our making this the new way rather than allowing it to enhance what is already a WONDERFUL way. That is the problem nowadays. No one seems to understand the concept of moderation anymore. Why does everything seem to be to the extreme??? Where does it stop?? Why cant we use this wonderful tool to enhance our wonderful industry...not take over as the "new way" of doing business.

When I call another agent, I would like a returned phone call...not a TEXT! Texting is great, but not for an everyday, and every occassion way of communicating. So many times I find that my calls are responded to by text even if I ask for a call back.

Come on everyone...we have taken the personal, and best of all, human contact, out of an industry that is based on just that. I want to meet my clients in person, meet the agents I am working with. I want to hear voices so that I can put a personality to that name, and see faces so that I can put a face to that name. Im a people person, and thats why I do what I do. That is what is so wonderful about what we do. The personal interaction with each other and our clients. That is exactly what makes us go home feeling great about our day...the connections we made! No, I am not talking about the ones on the computer, although I am certainly not knocking them.

I say lets most definitely embrace the new technology and what it has to offer, and lets use that social media to make gentle contact with others, but lets not let it change how we do business....let it enhance how we do business. THE CONNECTION WITH PEOPLE is absolutely the reason we are here right?

Lets keep the best part of our business going strong or else what might the future hold? Perhaps completing transactions from start to finish without ever having to make any human contact or connection? To some that may sound like a dream, but for me it is a terrifying thought.

What do you think? Are we going too far???

Suzanne, we are using Technology to connect so 'vs.' in title seems little out of place - just my opinion!

In my opinion the more high tech we get the more powerful the in person "pop-by" and the hand written note will become.

I also think it's interesting that is seems the more high tech communciation tools we get - the less real communication takes place between people (ie you example of asking for a call back and receiving a text -obvisouly the person didn't "get" your message).

thanks for the post.

@Praful: I dont think so only because I am making reference to those that are abusing it rather than using it in a manner that keeps our business personal. I am all for  the new tech stuff, and I'm all over the social media believe me! You will find me just about everywhere. The difference is I dont use it in place of an open house for instance. All I am worried about are those who are using all of it in place of the personal side of our business, not those who are merely using it to enhance it. Thank you for your input :o)

@Dan: That is a great perspective! I like it! Thank you!

Great post - and I agree with you 100%!!! I think the internet is an awesome tool, but can you imagine buying a home completely on line, sending the contract to a person you've never met completely on line, Closing completely on line.... so far, all possibilities.

So, how about the on line property inspection?  How about the on line move in past the mold sitting in that corner not shown in the photos.  How about paying too much for a property because you didn't review the market analysis with you Realtor®.

Virtual is great for many things, but a real estate purchase is a HUGE investment - well worth the personal touch.

So, for now, don't call me Rosie.

@Juli: Great comments!! Quite the addition to my blog post! It really helps drive my message home. Everything you said I love because it truly makes my point..."Where does it end" If it were up to many in this industry that is exactly how it will go!! When did things start being about how easily and quickly we can get it done rather than how efficiently??? Again, dont anyone misunderstand, some of these things DO make us more efficient if used properly. Thanks Juli! Good stuff!!

Suzanne,

IMHO, WHAT I have to communicate determines HOW (as in what media) I communicate that information.

While some folks can seem stuck in 1 form of communication I prefer to leverage each media for it's "highest & best use". Good post.

I agree with Dan - but I think the notes and pop by's will be important for prospecting.

People, including our clients, are too busy to make a lot of calls, depending on what you want to know. If all I need from you is "yes you're confirmed for 6" then an email with instructions is all I need. Text message can work just as well. We have all had clients that every call is a good 30 - 40 minutes - not only do I not have time for that, I don't want to do it. One of my very first text messages from a young woman resulted in the sale of one of my listings. When I texted her back right away she was thrilled! This twenty-something called me and said "OMG you text! I am soo happy!! We had a great relationship and almost all our communication was through text. Her sister is working with me now.

I just use technology to expand my web presence but all technology encourages people to call me if they need assitance with their real estate needs. I will call my clients for appointments. You still have to add the personal touch.

@Angela...I think that is great! I am happy for your success. I can text message with the best of them...WHEN its appropriate. Again, I am not saying that all the access we have to this technology and social media is a bad thing...I am saying that when it is used solely in place of personal communication it isnt good.  We simply need to remember what our industry represents...personal interaction. I am speaking more between agents rather than between agents and clients. Hey, if my client wants to text I am all for it, but if I am going to contact another agent I am not going to do it via text. Too many mistakes can happen when we rely too much on technology rather than good old human interaction. Thanks for the input Angela...much appreciated.

@Stacey...I agree with you. That is exactly I am talking about. Thank you for your input.

Very timely article, and I agree with much of what you say.  The most frustrating part of my business, increasingly, is not have parties all around the transaction who actually answer the phone when you call.  Drives me nuts!

@Steve...I apologize, I didn't mean to overlook you. Thank you and I agree that being versitile in this day and age is definitely key. We just all should be aware of what is and is not appropriate for each individual we are working with whether it be another agent or a client.

@Virginia...I feel your pain. Not answering phones is very frustrating especially when the phone call is returned with a text!
