AT&T Uses Facebook - Connecting with Wireless Customers

AT&T Uses Facebook to Try and Connect with Wireless Customers

Did you know that AT&T covers 97% of all Americans?  They claim to have the nations fastest mobile broadband network that allows you to talk and browse the web at the same time.  They also claim to have seamless access to over 20,000 Wi-Fi hot-spots available, more than any other U.S. wireless provider. Now they plan to try and improve the user experience for their mobile clients.

In 2010 they planned to invest somewhere between $18 and $19 Billion in their wireless networks across the country.  They've already invested more in their networks over the past three years than any of their U.S. competitors according to Mike Maxwell, Vice President and General Manager at AT&T for the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. "We've already upgraded our cell sites to enable faster mobile broadband speeds when paired with expanded backhaul, and we plan a similar upgrade at the end of the year that will enable even faster speeds." Backhaul?

They're not stopping there.  AT&T says they'll be adding thousands of new cell sites to their network, expanding their mobile broadband coverage to millions of existing and new customers, installing enhanced fiber backhaul, and increasing the capacity of their data network.  They are confident that these enhancements will provide a better experience and enable a seamless migration to the next generation of mobile broadband - LTE.  However, many users out there are still not having a positive experience.

What does all this mean to you as an AT&T customer?  Better coverage where it matters most, and fast access to information on the go.  If you think that AT&T isn't looking at every possible solution and challenge we face as users, let them know on their Facebook page at Facebook.com/ATT, like Mary has, I know they'd love to hear from you too.

So why am I so excited about what AT&T is doing for customers like me?  Because there's nothing worse than a dropped call when the person on the other end is right in the middle of their sentence saying something like.....  "Oh My Gosh, you're not going to believe this..."

(call dropped!) :-O (phone reads no service)  :-/   Dare I say...Can you hear me now?

It's nice to see an attempt by AT&T to listen and try to connect with customers via social media sites like Facebook.  Maybe this will be a huge turning point for their company and their service.  In the past, an unsatisfied customer who calls in over a phone line has nowhere near the impact and power that an unsatisfied customer on Facebook can have.  Social media sites like Facebook in all their glory have also created a bullhorn for the consumer to send a variety of messages to Company's and to other users in an unprecedented way.

Hate is pretty strong but it pretty aptly describes my feelings for AT&T.  I will do my best to NEVER use them again.

I have been with ATT since 1994. However, I am looking at Sprints bundle package for $69.99 unlimited calls, text and Internet. ATT does not have a package like this and will not match prices.

I can honestly say that I love my iPhone enough to put up with all the hoopla around the AT&T storm conditions but there is and probably always will be room for some improvement.

When I last walked into an AT&T store in the local mall (2-3 weeks ago) to pick up my new iPhone 4, they wouldn't take my cash, my check, or a debit/visa card to purchase the phone.  Are you kidding me?  They expected me to go to a bank, apply and get a credit card with no debit option, then come back to their store just so I could buy an iPhone from them?  You've got to be kidding me right?  NOPE!  :-O

So I walked next door considering the Google Android, and bought the iPhone 4 from Best Buy who would take any form or payment of my money.  Sorry AT&T, you might want to look into improving that customer experience while you're making "connection" improvements.  :-)

My cell phone doesn't work in my house and I had to get a landline because of this.  Now even though I am on the National Do Not Call LIst, I get solicitor phone calls all the time!  I hope they improve service in Dallas!!

I have pretty strong feelings about AT & T and they are not positive. Their customer service is, well, pretty challenged. It's great they are using FB to reach out to customers but they need to do a better job of follow-up.

Just goes to show what a powerful tool facebook can be.  As for AT&T in my area, they leave a great deal to be desired.

I think it is pretty brave of any consumer based business to welcome public comments.  Hopefully some of the folks commenting on this blog will get on over to fb and post the same comments.

Maybe it is because I am in Indiana, I have had a few dropped calls after leaving Verizon and going with AT&T for my iPhone----which I definitely have an emotional attachment to.  I will put up with a lot to keep this phone.

Customer service locally has been amazing and all was paid with a debit card.

It is like all relocating folks say to me, "People in Indiana are just so FRIENDLY!"

Noticed that nobody was mentioning the positive things about Verizon. I've only had one dropped call in over 5 years.... but let's not talk pricing.

Would appear that AT & T is throwing in the towel by going to social media for their answers.... are they implying that their customers can't get through to register their complaints due to dropped calls?  :-)

I get good coverage with Verizon but today I will receive my 6th HTC Droid Incredible since 05/06/10 - - they refuse to let me upgrade to the new Droid (because I just bought a new phone 05/06!!! that doesn't work); and gee, they can't figure out how I can switch my phone back to a BB because the Droid is under warranty. Ridiculous.

This is great stuff~

I'm thinking that AT&T might want to pay a visit and listen to some of your comments right here too?

One thing that I DO know for sure, no matter what you do, you will NEVER please everybody no matter how hard you try, but at least it looks like they're making an honest effort and attempt??  :-)

@Brad - lol~

I'm a T-Mobile customer and have been since the begining and before that when they were Sun. No problems and great customer service. My contract runs out in a month. The Sprint deal of $69.99 looks good.

I am shopping cell phone service as we speak.  I really, really, really, want the Iphone, but trying to be patient because I hear that Verizon will have by end of year.  I hope that is true!!!!  I don't like the plans that AT & T has to offer.  Verizon and Sprint, and even Boost and Virgin, which I'm really considering, has much better packages.

Thanks Brad!  I have a blackberry still and just got it not too long ago but hearing the Iphone has bad coverage here in our area.  Hopefully, consumers will get the word out to AT&T and they will be heard before I need to get a new phone as I sure do want one of those!!!!!

I've had nothing but the best service and customer service with ATT.

Comment #11 mentions big brother and how this is all creepy. I couldn't disagree more. I love how social media can be used to open up dialogues like Mary and ATT did and I don't think it's big brotherish at all. Besides, noone made her post on Facebook. How is that big brotherish in any way?

I do like Sprint's package as Harry mentioned above and it works very well for me.  Interesting comments here-thaks for this dialog starter, Brad.. Experimenting with social media seems like a good idea for a large company.
