"You're not smart enough, you're not good enough, and you'll probably fail."

By
Real Estate Agent

However...

Whether it's a quiet whisper, or a loud dominating roar, everyone has that negative and pessimistic voice inside of their head that holds them back from greatness. When it tells you that you're not good enough and you'll probably fail, how do you respond?

Please share in the comments below, what specifically you say to yourself to overcome the fear and doubt?

Mc Hammer - too legit to quit

It is an attitude.  It also helps when I go out and help clients or others...  And of course, when I can spend a little unexpected time with my kids, that helps too.

It happens to me, that's for sure. If it's sunny and I can do it, I go lay in the sun and think about the many times I have proved those thoughts wrong and how I know I can do whatever I am willing to work hard to do. If it's important enough to me, I seem to find a way to overcome. If I continue to wallow in it and give heed to the voice, I guess it's really not important enough for me to get one up on. Then it's time to move on.

Crawl into my bed and pull the covers over my head? :)

I believe the comments are more about what people 'like to' think they'd do.......what they know they should do..........I'd personally much rather like to hear how people really feel and what they initially do...:-)

Most of us experience situations like these once in a while, some more frequent than others and how we handle them really depend on your level of confidence and that security that holds you together. We MOVE ON. Let it roll off your sleeves and don't give in those thoughts. Move on to the next task and keep on plowing-away!

Hi Jon, I think I am more like Donna's comment. I get upset with myself when I don't move quick enough. In your gut Spirit, you get a idea and if I don't jump on it quick enough...it fades.

When I first started being a listing agent instead of a buyers agent, I would listen to Jack Canfields tapes in my car on the way to the appointment. That would get me pumped.

We have been going over a book in our team meetings on Call Reluctance. It analyses why we hesitate to call based on past experience, it has been an eye opener for my team on those who hate to make phone calls.

Johnathan, When I need help/advice I'm fortunate to have a few great mentors to go to in my life. Sometimes I can jump right into the big scary ring of fire and think the worse thing that happen to me is they say no or it won't work out. That's not to say I don't have wobbly knees in the process.

If I need a some advice & a shove I go my mentors for help.

Johnathan - there is a lesson to be learned in everything you try ..... if you don't try then indeed you have failed ..... if you tried and did not succeed you did not fail if you learned something from trying.

Jon,

I have a plaque sitting in front of me..."What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail"

It always keeps things in perspective and gives me that little kick I need to keep moving on and up:)

Interesting question posed here, and very timely. (OK, I am late with the comment but still timely, LOL) I had that nasty monkey whispering in my ear the other day AS I WAS SITTING AT 2 CLOSINGS, one right after the other! Stupid monkey. And these were good closings, one for a 555,000 home and one for a 375,000 home.

What do I do? First, I actually put a smile on my face. Do you know how hard it is for that monkey to talk in my ear when I am smiling? Then I repeat some very simple, positive things about myself. Over and over again.

If that doesn't work, I whip out a gun and shoot the damn monkey.

Negative thoughts and energy brings negative results, therefore... Positive thoughts and energy brings positive results.

Tough times never last, but tough people do. What does that mean? IF you stick to your plan, and execute it, things will improve. You have to have faith that bad times always pass.

I say, “Thank you, mom.” She told me almost every day until Christmas of 1965 that I would be a failure and never amount to a thing. In December 1965, my wise old grandmother adopted me and gave me the love AND discipline that all children need and deserve. With that love and discipline came the desire to prove my mother wrong, and I have.

In the 7th grade, due to a scheduling mix up, I was placed in the remedial history class.  Every day, the teacher, Mr. Morales, screamed at us that we were stupid, and that we were not able to learn anything.  I knew that I was not stupid, and that I was smarter than he was telling us.  In the 8th grade, I was put into the honors math program, and I felt vindicated to know that I was not a stupid kid.  I will never forget how awful Mr. Morales made me feel every day of class, and how I proved him wrong.

In the 10th grade, I was in an English class where the teacher was trying to teach a very basic method of paragraph construction that I had learned in the 3rd grade.  I felt the class was a waste of time, so I dropped it from my schedule.  The teacher angrily told me that I would never make it to college if I did not take her class.  She told me I would be a failure.  I went on to graduate from college with honors.

Whenever anyone suggests that I cannot succeed in anything, I think back to those two situations and how I overcame them by digging deeply into my inner strengths to persevere.

I say, "So what if I do?" The only thing worse than failing is NOT TRYING! I'd rather stick my neck out and try than know I was too lazy to do it. :) Fun to read other's responses. :)

U kive this question, Jon!  The answers from this question made me look at two of the members whose answers haunt me for the past three days.  One was from Claude Cross

Never underestimate the power of negative thinking.

The other was from former Green Beret Brent Kuge:

Being a former Green Beret... just not a possibility.  The power of the mind is amazing.

I've gone through alot of tough times recently, I tell myself the answer is always "no" before you start.  If you try, you now have the opportunity of yes!  We have got to our best so that we have no regrets.  It's sad to hear yourself, "I would've,; I could've; I should've ......
