The City of Franklin TN was founded in 1799 by Abram Maury, a State Senator. The town was named after Benjamin Franklin who was a close friend of Dr. Hugh Williamson, a member of the Continental Congress, and whom the county is named after.
Historic Franklin is centered around the town square located at the corners of 3rd Avenue and Main Street. Inside the square is a Civil War Monument erected in 1899. Many of the historic Franklin homes are within a short walking distance of the square. In addition to the historic sites, historic downtown Franklin is filled with specialty boutiques and eateries. Historic downtown Franklin has become a tourist destination for those visiting Middle Tennessee.
