Setting specific times to get certain jobs done in my day and week has helped me stay on track. It seems so easy in a day to get lost down some Alice in Wonderland hole instead of sticking to what has been posted in your “to do” list. I know that spending 40% of my time each week farming and prospecting in my area is essential for my pipeline. I know that I need to spend most of my time in “income producing activities” such as meeting with clients and prospects, taking care of my listings and buyers, and loading new content onto my website to assist my clients and prospects with their home buying and selling questions. When I sit down on a Sunday at some point for half an hour and plug in my activities I know I am protecting myself from getting lost in a day with work that is not work.
Time blocked activities such as making calls between 10 and 12 every day to my clients, prospects and sphere of influence relationships keep me in tune with what we are working on. New questions arise and deeper connections are made. These daily tasks deliver residuals each and every day. Calls lead to understanding the questions and concerns my clients and prospects have. Because we have had a conversation I know what is on their mind and they know I am concerned and will get back to them with some kind of an answer.
Each morning I spend time reading and researching my local market as well as the national scene before I write my blog. By the time I hit the office at 8AM I already know what I will be getting accomplished in the day. This allows me to get a real handle of productivity. With time blocking you don’t end up at the end of the day, or the end of the week with a whole lot of unfinished tasks. You also don’t end up feeling as though you accomplished nothing.
Being prepared and following a system is what can deliver you the success you need. Time blocking is a discipline but it delivers results. Take some time today to consider what you have on your plate for this week and next and see if you can get it whipped into some time blocks. Once you begin this approach you will see you feel much more in control of your career. The craziness that is our industry becomes smoothed out by what you work on each day. Pay attention to that and it will pay you back.
