A great vacation...

This past summer my husband and I vacationed in Boston and New York and we saw some awesome things!  But the last couple of weeks of vacation we stayed at home in Newfoundland and acted as 'tour guides' to our friends who were visiting from Ottawa, Canada...so we saw some sights we hadn't seen in a long time.  Here are a few highlights of our sightseeing.

This is the 'Pool' at Ferryland, NL.  Ferryland is both a fishing community AND an archeological dig. Lord Baltimore of England settled here in the 1620's to try to take advantage of the 'new land' whose waters were teeming with codfish...he didn't last long...the winter was too harsh for him...but he left some settlers behind.

Hundreds of artifacts, original cobblestone street (made with beach rocks), settlers and merchants houses (in photo above), a 25 ft deep well, a privvy (toilet) were also uncovered.

First flushable toilet....it flushed twice a day with the tide.

A 25 ft deep well...yes, that's water at the bottom....and a reflection of my flash.

Cobblestone street made with beach rocks...1600's!

Couldn't resist this one....shows Newfoundlanders sense of humour.  Actually the cobblestone street continues under the front lawn of this house.  It was excavated and carefully covered up again because the older couple who live in the house still wanted their front lawn.

Lighthouse at Ferryland.

Hubby contemplating life....

Cathy - These are gorgeous photographs of Ferryland, NL.  I looked at GoogleMaps to find Ferryland and was very surprised to see that the map spells St. John's as "Saint John's".  This only creates confusion with Saint John, New Brunswick.

Yes, I agree...it's a pet peeve of mine!  It also confuses the airlines...we (and many others) have had our luggage sent to Saint John, NB  instead of St. John's, NL.

Wow! These are really neat photos. It looks like a fun place to tour.  I have always wanted to tour a lighthouse.  Thank you so much for sharing these with us!

Thanks everyone...we do live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, but we who live here do not appreciate it as we should!  You may like to browse through another blog I wrote a while ago...more pics, etc.

Also, check this out!  We are the top coastal destination according to a WORLD survey by National Geographic.
