Let's Be Proactive About Property Taxes and Our Schools

Property taxes go towards many of the expenditures that keeps a City healthy in many ways. One of the greatest uses of property taxes is towards education in Cumberland County. Perhaps I am somewhat bias because I wear both the hat of a parent with school aged children and I wear the hat of a Realtor. In the early 2000's a deal was struck between the Board of Education and county commissioners. This deal came on the heels of a potential law suit brought on by the Board of Education against the county commissioners after threats of cuts in school funding to the tune of about $5.7 million. The current contract calls for the county to give approximately 50.7 cents of each dollar in property taxes to the school system. The current contract will expire in June.

County commissioners state that as much as they "want to pay for education they are worried about whether the county can afford to maintain the contract." There is an anticipated state budget shortfall this next fiscal year of more than $3 billion. This shortfall may end up being passed down to the county governments.  The economic climate is definitely not what it used to be around the entire nation. However, the one place that we must continue to put forth the most valiant of efforts is within our school systems. The county's worry about the expense of constructing a new jail may not continue to be necessary if we are proactive in our approach versus being reactive. Proactive means investing in our schools, our children, our future. Reactive is being more concerned with jails instead of our upcoming youth.  Think about it.
