Wayne IL: Homes and Horses

By
Industry Observer with Swanepoel T3 Group

Wayne, IL is a small community that straddles the DuPage-Kane border. Located about 40 miles west of Chicago and just east of St. Charles, the Village of Wayne is a residential community with a population of about 4,000 residents in about 1,100 households. Local residents will sometimes laughingly refer to Wayne as "Waaaaaayyynnnne" in nod to the equestrian heritage and the many property owners who "keep their horses at home".

Percheron HorseIn the 1860s the Dunham family settled in Wayne and founded Oaklawn Farms for breeding and selling prize Percheron horses which were originally imported from France. Mark Dunham's residence, Oaklawn is now popularly known as Dunham Castle. This turreted estate was built to model the Norman castles that Mark visited in France.

Along the main street of the Village of Wayne, houses were built for local residents who worked at Oaklawn Farms and the local railroad junction. Today the Village and Dunham Castle are listed as historic districts in the National Register of Historic Places.

Today Wayne offers a wide range of houses that appeal to buyers looking for a more relaxed lifestyle that is still just minutes from shopping, dining, and expressways. In the Village of Wayne, homes are available from $200,000 to about $500,000. Outside the Village are the "estate-zoned" properties in Wayne. While many of these properties do, in fact, house luxurious estates, the zoning really refers to the minimum four acres required for each property. 5N460 Curling Pond Rd, Wayne

This home at 5N460 Curling Pond Rd, Wayne is available for $675,000. Set on 4 acres on a beautiful quiet street, this has always been one of my favorite houses in Wayne.

Great looking house Leslie - Your area is not at all unlike mine.   High prices - are you near Chicago ?  Forgive my ignorence about your location,  but I think that markets that are the suburbs of major metropolitan area have real similarities.

Okay, there are MANY days I miss my house in Wayne - the large yards, the green grass, the freedom.

But, I don't miss shoveling and mowing!!!

I do miss riding my bicycle to the little country store - please tell me it's still there.  And, the tennis  courts behind it.

Personally, I always thought that an ice cream shop would do great there if they could get enough parking spaces - like when, um, my parents (lol) used to hang out at Al's from Happy Days.
