I have lived in Smyrna for four years now and I was born and raised in Nashville. I have been selling real estate in middle TN for 13 years. Long before I moved to Smyrna, I had heard stories about the Smyrna Police Department. Specifically, I had heard the stories about Smyrna being a speed trap. I grew up knowing that if you are going to speed anywhere in Rutherford county, it better not be in Smyrna. For many years I thought it was just an old country myth. Once I moved to Smyrna, I saw for myself that the myth was fact. I don't care where you drive in Smyrna, you will see at least one police car. I live right off of Rock Springs Road and I have personally seen three different spots on this one road where the police set up speed traps. The police have even set up a speed trap at the end of my street at the entrance to my subdivision. If I didn't know any better, I would be paranoid and think they were just out to get me.
An article in the Tennessean today confirmed that Smyrna is in fact a speed trap champion. Smyrna ranks very high in the nation as far as speed traps go. According to the Tennessean, the National Motorists Association has published a list of speed traps in each state. Nashville was #1 overall and Smyrna was #1 for cities with a population of 100,000 or less. When questioned about the ranking, Smyrna Police Seargant Bobby Gibson said "That's a reputation we've had for years." It's good to know that I am not paranoid. They're after EVERYBODY not just me.
