Ignorance is not an excuse

By
Real Estate Agent with YourStories Realty Group MA# 9517963

In business just like with the law, ignorance is no excuse. It matters little that you have friends who agree with you, best practices in business are defined by business practices and not by friends. Friends in our lives serve lots of purposes and business consultant can be one of those purposestas_f_dog_sleeping_on_floor. Everyone needs friends that can help him or her gain a perspective on aspects of their lives that they may not have a clear enough view for them. Let’s be honest about friendship to begin with. People become friends for a variety of reasons, but business acumen is pretty far down the list as a top reason. Mentors are a different animal all together. Mentors are more about business and career than friends are, so mentors can provide you competent analysis. Friends help you have fun, you share commonality and a friend may even complete you in some way as Adrian did with Rocky. Friends are not the right people to help you sort out your business problems.
In today’s world there is no end to business support on line. Take Active Rain for instance; Active Rain is an Internet platform and community for the Real Estate industry. There are close to 200,000 professionals who are members and many of them post information daily. Here is a place where you can find answers. Here is a place you can ask questions and people who you may not even know can provide you sage advice that is not colored with what a friends advice has to contain.
tas_roster_worse_for_wearIn a work situation, especially a professional needs question, I might discuss it with friends, but I would not rely on that information. I know my friends have my best interest in mind even if they don’t fully understand what my interests are. They are for you and will agree with you for the most part. Friends have an interest in keeping the relationship as it is. The part of a mentor or a business partner answering your question is far different. Their goal is to provide you with competent business information to help you succeed in business. That is if succeeding in business is your goal.
Successful people know the difference between a friend’s advice and that of a professional. A successful businessperson will look to other successes to emulate rather than to dig in and cover themselves over with the warm blanket of friends soothing words. My goals this year are the same I have had for the last 30 years and that is to know as much as I can about my profession and to continue to grow. I have always searched out the best minds in my profession rather than look for friends. I am not looking for friends I am looking to be the best professional I can be in my field. If I can do that I know I will be serving my community well and they will reward me with riches that include friendship along with the success.

Larry: The problem is, the rest of the world seems to allow -- heck, even embrace -- ignorance, so it's underdtandable when people try to plead it in business. Great post!

Larry~  Friends are good for some questions and guidance, but when it comes to business they usually don't understand it.  (unless they are an agent as well)

Hey Larry!  What a nice surprise!  I opened up AR and there was a nice familiar face!  Congrats on the featured post!  I like the distinction you made between getting advice from friends versus getting advice about your profession from a mentor.  Someone who will give you the honest truth to help you become successful in your field versus the warm blanket of kind words.  Although, like you mentioned, you know friends do usually have your best interest at heart.  Great thought provoking post Larry, as always!

Ah, the good old Socratic acknowledgement "I know that I know nothing"! Ignorance in itself is not necessarily bad, as long as we are aware of our ignorance and use this awareness towards perfecting our knowledge. It is only the ignorant who is unaware of his shortcomings that represents a real danger to our progress and betterment. Just like that rooster that doesn't seem to be aware that he is missing most of his feathers. LOL!!!

That guy in the upper right photo -- I want his job.  Seriously...when it comes to real estate, consumers would be wise to surround themselves with the best.

Good blog. Yes, lots of people ask their friends for advice without understanding that the source of your information my not be credible or reliable.

Ok, your post makes sense re the difference between friends and information.  But, I love the snoozing dog -- that is really being comfortable and relaxed.  But what happened to the rooster?  Did it just go through a blow dryer?

Larry... I loved the title of your post.. and even though you did a good job with this, that I understand and agree, I thought the title was going to suggest another kind of topic. About those that know better, but just decided to assume on one road to take that was easier than the other... but that they knew better.. I might be babbling, but I have a post in mind for later on.  In any case, I even have people in the mortgage business that I consider friends, who I can trust to tell me the truth, no matter what. To me, it's called communication and we have talked about this within our networking group. I have no problem with constructive criticism that some might think would be negative. To me, I take the positive approach, because now I can better myself... nice job here..

"I listen for a living." It's all about you.

Yesterday somewhere in NJ, I wrote "

This warms my heart on the road. Thank you for the comments and thank active rain for the feature.

Today now that I have had a chance to read all the wonderful comments I feel even more invigorated knowing I am making the right choices for my career by looking for the best minds and not looking for a friend to make me feel good about decisions that are made for me and I just need to have justified by their agreement.
