Stranger: “So what do you do?” So what do you do (say) when asked this question?

How many times have I been asked, "So what do you do?"

Meeting

I don't think that I have done a very good job of replying to this question according to Maya Bailey, Ph.D.  My normal reaction is to answer the question in a most direct and economic use of words rather than as a marketing opportunity. I am providing a link to Dr. Bailey's article on this subject below. I'm interested in your thoughts before and after your reading of Dr. Bailey's article.

So what do you think?

Ritu, I can guarantee that when I am meeting an unknown person(s) at least one of us is strange.  With humor aside I need this advice from Dr. Bailey. What has been your response?

I'm not sure what this is in reference to... will have to go read the article.  But when someone asks me what to do.. it depends upon who it is and what the situation is that they are dealing with.

Sometimes we don't want to weigh in on things.

If it's my child though.. that's a different matter. :)

Often I try to place myself in the other person's situation in my mind and at least offer a word of encouragement.

Funny... I thought someone was asking a question about what to do in a situation..

The question being How do I make a living or what profession am I in.. If it's a stranger, they usually ask because they want to tell me what they do.  :)

I usually answer them directly and then ask them what profession they are in.

Before the read:  I am the guy that gives the short answer.  "Real Estate on two fronts. As an instructor and in helping people buy and sell."  Then I quickly ask them what they do as folks don't care what you know until they know how much you care.  I then ask them a lot of questions about their line of work etc.

After the read:  Seems like a good approach but I think I'll stick with mine till it fails me.

Thanks for digging this up Bill.  I have subscribed to your blog and am looking forward to your next one.

Hercel, I think you are following the essence of Dr. Bailey's advice.
