Is Noisecation A Word? I'm Inventing It.

Real Estate Agent with Homesmart

Business stressI had a long work day today, like most of you, not looking for violin music. But I need a noisecation, a vacation from all the devices I am attached to.

As a realtor, I dont have fixed hours and many of my clients need to reach me in the evenings, its part of the territory.  I dont mind it, I love what I do.  But last night I had to give some thought to how late is late?  I realized I had slipped into a type of electronic bondage that I needed to put boundaries on.  Why do I have to check and reply to email at 10pm? I dont think my clients expect me to. They are probably in thier jammies or sleeping already.

These electronic leashes, ring, beep, chime and play different kinds of music to alert me to calls, text messages, emails, appointments reminders etc....

Last night I stopped working around 9pm and sat down to watch some mindless TV show, one that didn't require much thinking. Even on TV, phones were ringing, people were nose first in their phones answering messages, doorbells rang, I swear I even heard them on commercials.  So tonight I will turn these devices off for a couple of hours, and enjoy the cool Arizona evening on my patio.  I'm wondering how long I can avoid the temptation to check my email.

How do you take off your electronic leashes??

Hi Karen, good luck with turning off the leashes.  I'm like Pavlov's dog anymore, if I hear a ring, chirp, beep, ding, I'm searching for my phone to check email, voicemail, missed call, text message.

There has to be a time to turn it all off.  You may be too young to remember, but there used to be a commercial on TV of a woman putting up with all the noise, then they cut to her sinking into a bubble bath with the slogan "Calgon, take me away"... that's what I'm thinkin' about now...

Good luck, let me know how this works out for you.  I'm going to give it a try, right along with you.
