NEW YORK SYSTEM HOT DOGS/FLORIDA STYLE-NOT JUST FOOD-I HAVE A POINT!

By
Real Estate Agent with Watson Realty Corp.

I don't usually post food as a blog but I have a point, so stay with me if you will.

I grew up in Rhode Island and am fortunate to have experienced the regional treats. These things remind me of my childhood. Such things as:

Cool Refreshing Dell's Lemonade!                             Manhattan Clam Chowder

  Ah Coffee Cabinets!                                               Clam Cakes

                                                           Stuffies

We look forward to them each time we visit. And when we are here in Florida we find ways to bring back a little taste of home.

My all time favorite is the New York System Hot Dog! So this is how we try to duplicate them here in Florida. Laugh, I hope you are, but the smell is something else!

The trick to this is the cummin in the meat, the celery salt on the onions, and the wrapped in wax paper and left to sit in the brown bag kind of steamy thing that makes it GREAT!.

You will need:

hamburger, hot dogs, buns, mustard, white onions, celery salt, cummin, wax paper, brown lunch bags.

Cook the hotdogs cut the ends off the hot dogs and cook them (boil or microwave)

Cook the hamburger it is best if you then put in blender or such device so as to make fine in texture after cooking thoroughly. Add cummin to taste.

Put hotdogs in buns, then laddle the meat mixture on (pastry bag or zip lock bag with hole cut in it works)

Then add mustard, then chopped white onions, then celery salt.

Now, take 2 of your masterpieces side by side and carefully wrap in wax paper. Then put in the brown paper bag and let sit for about 5 to 10 minutes. Maybe put in microwave for a few seconds to warm them back up.

When you open the bag, you will not believe how good they smell. I hope you enjoy!

Please remember me with your referrals to Northeast Florida. As you see, I love R.I. and will take super great care of any referral you give me!!!

Hi Ellen:) Hot weiners!!! I think you may have to come from RI to love them. My son visits here and its one of the first things he gets. (But his wife, not from RI, does not see the attraction:)  I am going to try your recipe, although not sure if they will taste as good outside of a little diner!!!

Also....how about Newport Creamery and Awful Awfuls?  And Johhny cakes. Quahogs!!

Hi Karen, grew up near Hoxie 4 corners and we moved from Warwick to Jamestown in the late 60's.  Many a day we would grab some NYSHD's and sit at Conimicut Beach. We had spent a few years away in the 90's, went back and could not find anyone selling them, but did stumble upon a little place in Buttonwoods. It is almost impossible to duplicate the recipe. But we do our best here! Always fun to come back and to share memories. I had not heard of Oakland Beach for a while,my father brought it up last year, he took me out Quahogin there when I was very small.

Hi Ellen, Well I guess we don't know each other. I grew up in Norwood and now live just outside of Rocky Point! (do you remember Rocky Point?)  Probably no one else knows what you mean by Quahoggin, lol!!  Oakland Beach has turned around somewhat. Still some little beach shacks right next to some very nice homes. I figure it won't be too long before it all gets bought up. Too close to the bay to let it sit there and out of staters like it a lot.    As for the weiners, there is a little place right in Hoxie 4 but I have never been in there and it's been there for years. I always liked the ones in Olneyville!  Hope you are enjoying Fl!!

Of course I remember Rocky Point! We took my daughter there when she was 7 so that must have been 1996 or so. Sad to see it go. We get a kick out of trying to find it as we are flying in.
