Why do we do this job?

I have had this question come up a lot in my own mind these days. Why do people come into this field... especially these days? I had those questions posed to me. I was a sales manager for a fitness club in Michigan. I decided one day that I could not do "hard sales" the rest of my life and I could not sell things I do not believe in. But here is the thing I struggle with.

Who in our profession sells for the money? Just purely for the cash alone and nothing else? I think that if you are that person then go make a quick buck doing something else and not help someone with a descion that has long term effects on their life ( I also felt that selling memberships was a long term commitment.... boy was I wrong........) I have sold lots of memberships in my life in fact in a year I have sold right around 1000.But heres the rub I have met a lot of people in this field that treat this job the same way people do a 30$ membership at a local health club.

What is wrong with this picture? Here is what is wrong people save for years on end to be able to afford their "American Dream" and if we treat it as a small and meaningless thing on the same level as a 150 down 30 dollars a month membership then what are we doing for these people? NOTHING! and if you are these people, retire.... or find another job because there are people out there that love the people we deal with on a daily basis.

I have taken many sales training classes and public speaking courses and all they did was reinforce my love for people... they did not make me any better at get rich/take advantage of people courses. So in my opinion save your money and look for a different job and spare the people you may hurt!

Chris:  I would just LOVE to read this blog post... but your one huge paragraph is just too difficult for my older eyes to handle.  Would you be so kind to this older chick, and break it up into about five smaller paragraphs.

It would make it easier to read... which would bring more readers, which would bring more comments.  AND... it would look better.  Thanks so much.  I will return later to see if you took my suggestion.  And again... many thanks.

Have a great weekend.

I split it up.... hope its more coherant than my last post... I do tend to ramble. This is just something near to my heart in this field and in sales in general...

Chris:  Much better.  And... rambling is just fine.  In fact, rambling brings with it a "stream of consciousness" that shares a part of your personality in a different way... than speaking in a different kind of pattern.  So, not to worry.  Again, rambling is fine... and, when it is broken up like you just did... I think people will read it, and comment, and everybody wins.  <smile>

I agree with your idea that the positive side of this is getting people into the American dream.   At the end of the day I feel good about that.   Often we can use our skills to help the avoid common pitfalls or get a better deal for them.

Chris - good post! You're outside blog looks good too. Karen gave you some great advise also. You can even double space between paragraphs if you wanted to. Sometimes on blogs the more white space the better, if it looks like a ton of reading, many times people will skip over your post, and I would think consumers would do the same thing.

By the way, I do agree with you! Keep up the good work!
