This house does not look like Searcy Arkansas. So what's its history?

One can't help noticing this house as one drives down East Market Street.  It's at the corner of Market and Moss and right behind the Kroger store.  It sticks out like the "sore thumb" that southerners describe.

Rock house on Moss St

For one thing it has a flat roof and all Southern people know that flat roofs are asking for leaks.

Secondly, it is short.  Whoever built it could probably stand flat-footed and stack those rocks.

Thirdly, it has some class.  Look at those curves on the windows and at the entrance.

The court house says it was built in 1945 and has 699 sq. ft. of living space.

When I drove by with Hubby (life-time Searcy resident) one day and asked him if that used to be a honky tonk he replied, "Heck no, my momma and daddy used to live in it."  So it must have been a rental property at that time and also now.

I still think it should have a more colorful background.  How about it, Searcy Sleuths?  Know anything about this one?

Barbara, Kind of a sweet looking old place but very unusual I'll admit.

We have become very finicky about where we live and what we'll live in. Growing up in the sixties we had less stringent requirements than nowadays for sure. Wouldn't you agree?

That house is an odd duck. Is it typical of houses in Searcy, Arkansas, well, why not. Look at the grand location. My thought is it was built by a craftsman with limited resourses so that was as big as he could afford. What a hoot that Dude's parents lived there at one time. Love it!

Charles Edwards, you've gotta go back further than the 60's for my growing up and boy!  did we ever have a different set of requirements.  That house would be a palace.

Charles Buell, I honestly thought the same time.  He'd look so cute on the top of that house with his little tail curled up!

Don, thanks for the google view.  You are probably right about someone doing as much as they could.  Now I'm picturing a man who could set rocks and he could just go pick them up in anybody's woods and he put them around his little house.  Until someone gives us the true story we just imagine.

When I left Searcy in 1991 this house was occupied by Alvin and Lela McCollum.  It was owned by the older of their two daughters, Lavelle.  I believe she lived in Beebe at the time.  The McCollum's younger daughter was in my class, 1960 and Lavelle was probably five or so years older.

Thanks, for the history of the house, Mary Dunn.  Lavelle MCollum graduated with us in the SHS Class of '54.  I understand from her cousin, Pernell Akridge Weir, that she still lives in Searcy.  I'll see if I can't get in touch with her and find out more about the house.

I've passed by it many times but never gave it a second glance.  It IS interesting, isn't it?  Almost looks as if there isn't a roof!

Mary Dunn, thanks for helping with the history of this unique house.

Ruth, I agree with you.

Anita, I don't know how you could pass this house without noticing.  It is so different.  Surely someone will remember the history.  The Sleuths are slipping.....

It is a very unusual looking house.  That's so funny your hubby's parents used to live there, how co-incident!

Rita, it was rather surprising.

Nutsy, that's a handsome guy...that Dano Boonie fellow.  Maybe you need to copy his dress instead of wearing that stupid weinie suit.

My wife, Jenna, just told me that a modern classroom is required to have at least 900 square feet of space.

Luke, that's a big room!  That means the schools have to have lots of square footage!!  What does Jenna teach?
