Blogs and Posts... Closets and Shoes...

By

Question:  This little article I am writing right now... is it a "blog?"  Or is it a "post?"  Or is there no difference ?

For some reason... I often see a surprising number of Active Rainers using the word "blog" when the correct word would be "post."

Like many women, if not MOST women... I like to go shopping.  And... one of the "funner" things about shopping... is shopping for shoes.

I have fun with my shoes.  (I guess at times I am easily amused.)  Lots of different styles.  For women, shoes serve nowhere near the same purpose as they do for men.

Shoes for men... cover their feet.  Keep them dry when they step in puddles.

Shoes for women... are a "fashion accessory."  I don't really have a "closet full" of shoes like many women do, but I do have more than my fair share.

First... I buy my "shoes" and then I take them home and then I put them in my "closet."

Now... for the point of this post.  It's about the confusion with the words post and blog.

This article that I am writing... as part of this "30 in 30" challenge I am doing... is a "post..." not a blog.  Like buying a pair of shoes.

Where do I put this "post" after I write it ?  I put it in my "blog."  Or, after I write this post... I "submit" it to my blog.  Like putting a pair of shoes in my closet.

The post is the shoes.  The blog is the closet.  Just as I don't buy a closet... I don't write a blog.

Another comparison would be like writing in a diary, or writing in a journal.

Just as we would write an "entry" in our diary, or write an "entry" in our "journal..." we write a post in our blog.  Or we post "to" our blog.

You buy shoes, and put them IN your closet.  You write posts... and submit them to your blog.  Same idea.

Karen, I too notice when the two are mixed up----if I go and put a blog on my post will the birds or squirrels carry it away?

Hey Karen, I checked the number of blog posts I wrote during the past year and each month I've posted thrity or more--so guess I am doing okay without the challenge. The 5,000 points would have been nice...;)

Karen Anne - As usual, not only is the post meaningful, but the varied comments give cause to re-think and re-evaluate positions.  I don't mean as much for "changing minds" as staying relevant to the community at large.  I continue to be amazed at how much I learn from your "closet" and the individual "shoes" therein .... thanks!

Karen Anne - well, this explains why I like blogging (or posting???)...I love shoes and love to see my closet full of them!  I guess I like buying shoes to fill my closet so I like writing posts to fill my blog!  :D

Hi Karen Anne - Your posts should be required reading for newbies.  I just learned another answer to a SIMPLE question that I didn't think to ask!  "A comment only gets the 25 points if it is TEN words or longer."  I didn't know that--but my comments tend to be wordy anyway.

I will tune in at a reasonable hour to read your post tomorrow--I can't believe how many comments you got in the dead of the night!!!  BTW, this comment doesn't get me any points as I have used up my daily allowance--see how much I appreciate you?!

LOL. Karen... I was kind of joking, but your response to me really made me chuckle. My 4-year old told me the other day that words are confusing when we were explaining that "funner" isn't a word. I think that he might be right! Thanks for the chuckle over something that should be so easy to figure out.

Well I think at least ALL of the women on AR now understand the correct us of the terms!  Awesome analogy.  The importance of comfortable AND confidence building stylish shoes is lost on most men.   Now...what to use for the men that might stick????  The beer cans are in the fridge?  Oh, how terribly sexist of me.  Maybe the guys could chime in with a more updated and less sterotypical, but just as effective analogy.

I don't technically have a closet, and my shoes are on the floor...so what does that say about my blogs and posts?  :)

Thank you for clearing that up so eloquently.  This was a pet peeve of mine but I just kind of ignored it.

Well explained!  Also, thanks for the history in your comments, on how the word "blog" came to be.  As I was reading your post I had this exact question pop into my head and was wondering why it wasn't called an E-log.  Now I know!

Well that should clear it up for all those confused by the terms.  As for me, I'm off to write a blog. :)

Didja ever write a fence post?
If I put my shoes on a tree does it become a shoe tree?
If I post a letter will it go into a blog?
Do bloggers ever go postal?
By the way, to a man, if shoes are the posts then the floor in front of the closet, or beside the bed, is the blog.

Jane:  I was merely being my nice, sweet self with my comment to you... always wanting to say nice things... but, if what you are saying IS true... then you look "very well preserved."  Must be the vitamins and the night cream... <silly smile>

Please, everyone... I am really NOT this anal.  Honestly I'm not.  This is just a little "scratch on the chalkboard" thingie for me.  Just my silly little doofus self.  Of course, taking just about anything I have to say with a grain of salt... is usually recommended.

Bob in #45:  Some cute ideas, there.  By the way... the musician in me asks... did you ever play foot-notes with a shoe horn ?  And of course, you know what kind of music results when one plays foot-notes with a shoe horn ?  "Sole" music.  <ducking>

Hi, Karen Anne. I love this POST! The closet/shoe example is a very clear and simple way to get your point across. Amusing, too.

Leslie:  I spent nine years teaching in the seventh grade in the Cleveland Catholic Schools.  Being with twelve and thirteen-year-olds that long, and that consistently, kind of had me end up with my emotional, psychological and educational progress ENDING right there... at that level.  So, if you would keep that in mind about me... it explains quite a bit.

(ahhh... I had not thought of this in a while... and as I was writing it right here... I see it would be a great subject for one of my next posts.  So... double-thank-you for your comment, Leslie.
