Just a reminder on those FaceBook Business pages

Hi all. This just might be the shortest post I've ever written, but I thought it might be useful for some of you.

If you have a FaceBook Business page that you set up a while ago, or paid someone else to do it for you, and you have one or more of those fancy custom FBML tabs on it - go check on your page. The maximum allowable width of what can be dispayed in those custom FBML tabs is now 520 pixels. Everything else gets cut off, and look awful.

I've ran across quite a few pages that appear to be cut in half over the last few days, hence this little public service announcement, for what it's worth.

Also, FB will phase out FBML completely by the end of the year, or so they say, so all that nifty stuff in your pages will have to be hosted by YOU internally and displayed via iFrames.

My Susan - thank you, thank you.. Jon worked really hard on that one:-) As for the topic - no worries. Half the time, i've no idea what I'm talking about.

Fred - nope, if you are going to delete it, I don't see why it would matter, so moot point for you.

Robert - they've been talking about it for a while now. It might be just an issue of space though I doubt it. Definitely spawned an industry, so it'll be interesting to watch. I, personally, like the move, because internally hosted code dumped via simple iFrame is so much easier to control for us designer types, but there are quite a few protesting. I think the less proprietary language we have out there, the better. Let's stick to standards when it comes to code, and at least this way we are all on the same

Jon - that's not you being stupid, it's me being dislexic. It's FBML - and I just fixed it in the post, and quite simply translates to Face Book Markup Language. Kind of like HTML (Hyper Transfer Markup Language), only for Facebook. :-)

Hi Inna! I DO have an idea what you're referring to and I contacted the person who created it for me and have not gotten a response back as have ZERO of the folks who I recommended to that person! VERY frustrating--not only do I now have to pay someone to fix their mistake (because according to someone else who does these, it was a known fact that this change was coming when all of our pages were created) but, I also have mud on my face b/c I recommended that person! ARRGH!

So, now that I'm off my soapbox, what is your pittance?!

Rebecca - fixing yours. Check your emal:-) But yeah - it's basically done! Yippy.

Debbe - sent you my 'pittance' request. As for service providers being MIA when it comes to FB stuff - I guess if they have a few hundred of these pages to retrofit or fix now, they are probably not able to keep up. I doubt it's neglect, per se.:-) Heck, since that post of yours, Jon & I have been playing major catchup...

Mara - I just might stick toes into my footer:-) As for FB, it's really simple. If you have a fan page and it still looks right, then you've nothing to worry about. Most older pages were built too large for current max size, so they get cut off now.

Ruthmarie - I think in your case, it's one of the few free options you have, and it should certainly get some results, although you'd have to put in quite a bit of time into getting it all started:-)

Elizabeth - pittance might be an overstatement, but we'd be glad to help. :-)

Christine - it seems to all be up in the air so far, but even if FB folks don't enable iFrames instead of their weird proprietary bit of html for the tabs, you are still lucky indeed, as chances are your page would have now been the wrong size.
