Is any trip to New York complete without having pizza at Grimaldi's? Certainly no walk across Brooklyn Bridge should end without one of those delicious slices!
As anyone who knows me will tell you I'm not big on waiting in lines.....and the thought of waiting 1.5 hrs in line for pizza would have been ridiculous to me - except my daughter Rachel said it was without a doubt worth the wait and besides she came along for the ride to Coney Island when she really didn't want to :)
So of course not being able to stand still for long - in the 90 degree plus heat I might add - I took advantage of the time to talk to the cooks and walk around the area and take some pics.
Taking a foray 'into' the restuarant - while Rachel was holding our place in line 'outside' the restaurant - I had to empathize with the cooks - if I thought the heat outside was bad - next to the coal fired ovens it was blistering! There a mini assembly line - with the ease of a job done many a time - one teased the dough into shape, another slathered on the sauce and toppings and then another cook paddled it into the oven, while the black shirted waiters waiting to deliver the feast to those of us gathered family style at the tables :).
In the world of pizza, Grimaldi's is an institution, what with their coal-fired brick oven pizza, giving it a unique, yummy, smokey flavor and a crisp crust, and with those delicious globs of fresh mozzarella and and fresh basil...mmm mmm mmm!
I have to tell you it was without a doubt worth the wait!
