Featured Posts... What Are They ? How Do You Get One ? What Gets Featured, and What Does Not ?

By
Real Estate Agent with New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County

Yesterday, in a comment, someone asked a question about Featured Posts.

The question was pretty simple.  It was... "How Does One Get A Featured Post ?"  And then the follow-up question of... "And Who Has to Think my Post "deserves" to be Featured... to get it featured ?"  Basically... "What do I have to do... to get my post Featured."

----------------

As far as Featured Posts are concerned, the subject has been, and continues to be, one that frustrates many folks.  But those are, of course, the Rainers who have not had their posts Featured.  It, too, delights many Rainers, who HAVE had posts that have been featured.  And then there are those... both who have and have not been Featured... who really don't care.

I have my own personal thoughts on what it takes for a post to be Featured.  As many of those who read my posts know, I am a former teacher.  With that in mind... this post will hopefully also be a "Class Participation" post... and as such... it will be a post that will get some absolutely excellent comments and answers.

---------------

So... just what IS... a Featured Post ?  It is just like you might think.  Somebody, somewhere thought enough of that post... to "put the Active Rain Spotlight" on it.

A "Featured Post" gets the Active Rain Gold Star.  It looks like this... Star , and if your post gets "Featured"... along with the Gold Star, the writer gets their "normal" points for writing the post "almost doubled."  So, instead of your post getting the 225 points... it gets 425 points.  IF... the post ends up getting a TON of comments... the points for that Featured Post could jump up to as high as 450... or up to a maximum of 475 points.

What makes a post get Featured ?  My thoughts are... that the post has to be on a subject that interests a lot of people.  I am also guessing that it could be a post that might bring extra attention from Google for Google Juice.  (that is a guess).

It also may be thought to be a Post that will bring a ton of comments.  It could be about real estate, but it also could be about something seemingly totally unrelated to real estate.

It could be about a personal experience.  Or about your "take" on something that happened on Active Rain.

It might even get featured because it was an Active Rain tutorial that AR really thought would help lots and lots of its members.

Is there a formula you can follow to "make sure" your post gets Featured ?  Probably not.  But my ideas above at least give some hint about what kind of post it must be.  But, then again, I have written some posts that I thought were AWESOME... that did not get featured... and some posts that I didn't even THINK had a CHANCE to get featured, and they did.  You simply never know.

Also, when a post gets Featured... it gets put into the "Featured" category on the Active Rain post "blog roll."  Many Active Rainers read ONLY the Featured Posts when they sign on.  In some ways, that really IRKS me... because if that's where those Rainer's attention goes... to reading ONLY the Featured posts... those folks can easily MISS some of the great posts that many of the Newbies write.

So... again, what gets Featured ?  Well... for me, the best way of finding THAT answer... is to either pick a Rainer you like, and scroll down her or his posts till you find one that got Featured, and read and study it.

Or... go to the "Featured" link at the top-left of the Active Rain blog roll, click on the blue underlined link that says Featured.  Read about twenty of the Featured posts... which would be a lot of reading, I know, but it would also give you a great "basis" for what kind of post gets Featured.

Or... you could go to MY blog... and read about a month's worth of posts... to get a feel for what I wrote... that got Featured.

The one thing for sure... is that there really is NOT any way to predict what gets Featured, and what does not.

One last point.  So, who decides what gets Featured ?  The Dudes and Dude-ettes at Active Rain decide.  They read and read and read... looking for posts THEY feel should get the Gold Star.  BUT... us Rainers can also help decide.

On every post... up at the top right corner... there is a little button that says "Suggest."  If we hit that button on a post we like... it "suggests" to Active Rain that WE think that post deserves to be featured.  Hitting that button basically says to them... "Hey, I think this post deserves a Star.  Please take a look at it."  There are a TON of posts written every day, and us hitting that "Suggest" button really helps them out.

---------------

SO... some questions for you.

If you have written one or more Featured Posts... what do you think GOT that post featured ?  Why THAT post ?

In general... what KINDS of posts do YOU think get featured ?

Have you ever written a post that Got Featured, and it surprised the heck out of you that it did ?  What was it about ?

What advice would YOU give to someone who really wants to get their post Featured ?

Karen Anne and Ken (#48): My apologies. My comment is a bit too long. And I agree, Ken… I should have posted it to my blog and not usurped Karen Anne’s post.

Kindest regards,

Bill in # 49:  Not to worry.  Although your comment is long, I personally tend to make some very long comments on other folk's posts.  I can be just a tad long-winded myself.  Often, though, when I DO that... I end up leaving the comment as I made it, and then turning that extra-long comment into a post of its own.

Ken in # 48:  I know you were trying to be helpful, but if you would be so kind, I would prefer to "police" my own blog posts.  But, thanks for your concern.

Ken in # 48... part II:  I totally suggest that you read all of the comments on MY posts before you yourself comment... if you can.  I have ALWAYS had excellent comments, and excellent and incisive commentors... I both pride myself on that, and am also very proud of those who DO comment on my posts.  Also... if because you have not read all the comments, and end up saying things that have already been covered once, or even several times... it shows a kind of disrespect for the intelligence of the commentors who have gone before.

We do a dialogue here.  Those who comment generally DO read all of the existing comments before THEY comment.  AND... often-times... after they have commented, they will return at a later time, and read the additional comments made, and also look for later comments by new commentors who are responding back to them... as well as to myself.

One thing you may have missed... if you did not read the preceeding comments... it the hint I made about this post being made a Featured post... which it has not yet BEEN made.  I don't expect it to, either.  Without being featured, the post has reached fifty-one comments.  Not bad for a non-featured post... doncha think ?

And Ken... as you were saying Wala... I am guessing that you meant to say the French word Voila... which means... "there it is !"

Also, Ken... regarding the two posts about the city park... I don't see the problem.  These are Localism posts... just like the ones about favorite restaurants are Localism posts.  When some out-of-towners see those posts, after a while they begin to see the writer as an agent who really knows the area... and often call her or him to use as their buyer's agent.

Note to Bill:  Your extended comment was pretty much a re-statment of many of the comments that had gone before.  From the way your comment was written... I did wonder if you had A) read all of my original post before commenting, and B) read most or all of the preceeding comments.

Re-stating what was already said is fine... but when you do it, and don't refer to the orginal commentor or commentors who said it, and also sound like you are stating it for the first time... it can "appear" that you didn't read before you spoke.  Don't know if you don't care about looking that way... but, it's just a thought.  Just my thought, here.

I know you talked about algorithyms, and quoted quite a few statistics... and I do wonder if that really IS how Active Rain picks the Featured Posts.

If so, computer-wise, it may be helpful... but "people-wise"... it misses out on a whole lot of the human'ness that we Rainers have, and continue to project.

Final note:  If you had read the full post, you might have seen that the point was to find out the personal reactions of the commentors... which they did give... and not postulate a theory about algorithyms.  I wanted to hear about your personal experiences... so we all could share them, and so perhaps each of us could take something from them WITH us... after reading.

Am I making any sense here ?  Hope so.  Have a great Sunday... take care...

Hi Karen-Anne It also may have something to do with how many people click "suggest."  I have  afeeling there is a tipping point for that.

I really did enjoy this post. I knew there was no rhyme or reason to what pots gets picked. Some of the ones that have gotten picked in the past made me wonder why, they were so boring! I guess what may interest me may not interest someone else.

All in all there is a lot of reading to do to get them picked and I don't relish that job at all. I think they are doing a good job.

Coming to you from Texas...

Good morning, Karen Anne. Yep, I did read all of your post. And, yes, I did read the comments preceding mine… at least up to comment #18, which is when I started researching/writing my comment.

I appreciate your suggestion to properly credit those whose points I’m restating. My habit is to read everything and then post, and I wouldn’t want to be thought of otherwise. I unfortunately have a bad habit of restating what was already said as my way of acknowledging what was said… but typically without crediting the originator. Thank you for your perspective and the insight it gave me.

I agree that, if the reviewers use an algorithm to whittle down the number of posts they review each day, it does sort of dehumanize the spirit of sharing and camaraderie that exists on AR. (Personally, I hope they don’t use an algorithm. But… I can understand why they would from a logistics perspective.)

As for the point of your post being to provide personal experiences… since I have never been featured, I have nothing to offer from that perspective. But I chose to comment because I interpreted your post’s underlying theme as trying to make sense of why some posts get featured and others don’t. That’s why I hypothesized that (a) reviewers may use an algorithm, or (b) it may just be luck… submitting the right post at the right time. (In other words, it’s no reflection on the author’s ability to provide well-written, timely, relevant content.)

And, yes, you are making sense. Again, thank you for your suggestions. I really do value your perspectives, and I enjoy your posts.

And thank you for wishing me a great Sunday. The sun’s just starting to peak over the horizon here in California. The sky is clear, and it should a beautiful day. I hope you enjoy your Sunday, too.

What gets featured does sometimes surprise me.

A recent post of mine about Realtor attire was featured and now has well over 300 comments - and I thought it was just something I wrote because I couldn't think of anything else that day - and I'm working on the 30-30 challenge.

I've even gotten a personal email from Venezuala as a result. So, you just never know.

Bill:  After reading your excellent comment # 56... I now understand where you were coming from.  With that in mind, I have "re-worked" my comment # 53... so it is no longer as "confrontational" as it was.  I am sorry it sounded so "rant'ish."

As for MY Sunday... luckily I got up early enough... so I still will have time for my morning nap.  As to exactly when I will take my "afternoon nap"... well... that is still to be decided.  Sometimes I find my OWN blog posts SO exciting, that they put ME to sleep.  And, I might add... that is often a great idea.

Have a great Sunday... but remember to leave time for your nap.  Now... where did I put my "blankie ?"

I have no idea why some of my posts get featured, and others don't.  Seems if I throw something together, off the top of my head, I'm more likely to get featured than if I wrote a well thought out post.  Who knows how it works.

Have you ever written a post that Got Featured, and it surprised the heck out of you that it did ?  What was it about ? ........it was about a success story about AR!

What is the purple star for?

Chris Ann:  One of the points I was trying to make... and I guess I could have made it better... is that so often... when I just experience some sort of a "brainstorm"... and just sit down and let the post "flow"... it ends up coming out so much better than if I had worked on it for a week... or two.  And then, it gets featured.  The best answer to this question, and to most questions... is still... "it depends.

Tracy:  I am happy to answer your question.  About a month ago... Active Rain came out with a policy that recognized that there are a TON of posts written every day, and made the realization that they could not POSSIBLY keep up with all of them... as far as deciding what posts to FEATURE.  So, they came up with the gold button at the top-right of each post.

When anyone reading any particular post... thinks that it is an especially good post... and thinks to themselves... "gee, this post should be featured... it's so good."  If that happens, that person can go to the upper right and click on the "suggest" button... which kind of "flags" the post... to indicate to the folks who decide these things at Active Rain... that that they should read that particular post... as it might be one that is good enough to feature.

And... as an incentive or a reward for us Members to DO thing button-pressing... Active Rain keeps track of the number of times you pressed that "suggest" button... and Active Rain agreed with you... that the post was good enough to Feature... so they did.  Once you have "suggested" five posts that you think should be featured... and Active Rain DOES end up Featuring it... you get your little  Called Shot Master  Purple Star under your picture.  It's kinda like a boy scout merit badge, or a girl scout proficiency badge... if they still call them that.

I think one of the most common reasons a post gets featured is a really catchy title.  Especially if it's a little sassy, thought provoking or as sometimes happens, controversial.

Thanks for the details on how posts are selected and scored for features. Knew some of it, but learned a bit more. Thanks Karen!

I agree with Valerie - you have shed some light on the process, Karen Anne. Even if we are relegated to speculation on the actual criteria used, it was helpful. I was fortunate to have one post featured do far. It surprised me greatly, but it couldn't have come at a better time since that day nothing else went right, including my second escrow in two weeks collapsing, this one due to buyer family illness. It provided me with a much needed lift, and took my mind off my problems when I came home and started answering comments.

AR as an anti-depressant - cheap at twice the price! Great job - keep up the good work, all!
