Carlsbad Area Beach Access for the Physically Challenged

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. CA DRE #01490977

Access to beaches in California is pretty good, as compared to what I have seen in other parts of the country. There is a fair amount of parking (much of it free) so residents and visitors can readily enjoy the outdoor beach life that California is so famous for.

For obvious reasons, beach accessibility can be a real task for those who are physically challenged or who have disabilities. Sand does not make a good walking surface, and regular wheelchairs don't do well. Many of our beaches here in North County San Diego, including some in Carlsbad, are at the base of the bluffs, so access often is by stairs (although the Encinitas beaches are more challenging in terms of stair access, especially at Swami's, Grandview, Stone Steps and Beacon's) which are challenging themselves.

[above photo is of the steps DOWN to Swami's - not for the faint of heart NOT the physically challenged]

A number of the beaches, while not providing pathways on the beach, have parking adjacent to the beaches so individuals with physical challenges can still enjoy the views (e.g., along the Coastal Highway in Carlsbad in particular; also in Cardiff). Some of the state beaches are also accessible (this site provides a good summary of the different types of access and at which beaches) with pathways, access to campgrounds and picnic areas (with usable barbecues) and more. As one would expect all parking lots have designated accessibility parking spaces as required by law.

South Carlsbad State Beach (including Ponto Day use), a favorite Carlsbad beach, has a number of accessibility features. There is a beach wheelchair available.

Moonlight Beach, in Encinitas south of Carlsbad, has 2 rubberized pathways right on to the beach with short ramps at the beginning, so that those in wheelchairs can get out on to the beach near the water (see photos above). One path terminates at a rubberized deck in the middle of the beach (below).

Accessibility is a huge issue, and protected by both state and federal law. Our beaches should be no different. For more information for residents and travelers with disabilities here in San Diego, this site provides a wealth of information on events, hotels, activities, tours and more.

Jeff, after having a daugher in a wheel chair this summer, I can so appreciate the challenges the handicapped go through. You never know until you walk in their shoes what they have to endure.

Are the special pathways to be used only by those in wheelchairs or physically disabled? That certainly seems like a great thing to offer so ALL people can enjoy the beaches.

Elaine - no they are not restricted. I don't think they get alot of use but it does make it easy, even for someone who can walk but has difficulty on the sand. To me it's likke any other place - everyone should have access provided it can be done safely.

Jeff: Great post for our beaches! I would recommend South Carlsbad State Beach--as well as Oceanside-- because of their relatively level access. Most of Encinitas and Solana Beach are a bit steep and "bluffy."

Jeff -- One year my in-laws came to California to visit and my mother-in-law was in a wheelchair. The set-up for the hanicap in beach parking was a true benefit. Now if we could those wheelchairs ocean side, she would have been a happy clam!

Whether it's down to the beaches or up to the mountains, there are challenges. When I visited Egypt I felt so sad that the handicapped would never be able to see inside the tombs or the Pyramids - the ancients just didn't design that way.

Roberta - thanks. The only one in Encinitas really is Moonlight - the others are quite a challenge.

Paula - well it still is a challenge but there are some places where you can get as close as is reasonable. Too bad it wasn't possible as the time.

Sharon - I felt the same way in parts of Europe and South America. We take so much for granted at times.

Thanks, Corina. Let me know what you find out. I have not seen the chairs in action here yet, but have elsewhere in other parts of the country. It's great for people who need that assistance.

Thank YOU for sharing this information, Corina. I'm sure there are some people who can now enjot a visit to the beach ON THE SAND and NEAR the water.

Takes some pics of your father-in-law and share them (if he's OK with it). :)
