Is your library relevant in this technology crazy world? Red Hook is

Today because most people have access to the Internet many feel libraries are not that relevant anymore, but I disagree.  Libraries are an important asset to a community.

To prove my point I will show you what Red Hook Library in Red Hook NY means to the community. At the library there are many programs available and here are just a few:

  • Book Club
  • Knitting Club
  • Whether you are taking the GED, SAT, Civil Service exam or graduate exams did you know if you are a member of the library there are practice exams available on-line that you can access as long as you have a library card?
  • Looking for a job? If you are not I am sure you know someone who is.  The Red Hook Library has tools to help make the job search more productive
  • For seniors they have had brain games type activities
  • Many programs for the young.
  • For those still without computers a place to look up information on-line or get their email.
  • For others it is a place to get books on tape, music and old movies on DVD

Several years ago plans were made by the library and friends of the Red Hook Library for "The Big Read" which occurred this summer.  This event engaged many in the community with activities ranging from a concert at the Richard B. Fisher Center at Bard College to The Big Read Day at Clermont State Park where people learned about old fashion games, gardens, period cars and photographs and had the opportunity to tour one of the many historic homes in the area.

So you can see, by belonging to one of these groups it is a way to bring the community together.  The Big Read was a great example of this as many worked to make it a success and the businesses in town made contributions in various ways.

The efforts of the Red Hook Library and the friends of the Red Hook Library did not go unnoticed as other communities wanted to know how they could bring a similar program to their community.

The State of NY also took notice and two members of the friends of the Library were presented with citations from the New York State Assembly and the Village of Red Hook.

So, we in Red Hook appreciate our library, even its physical appearance, as it is the best example in the area of octagonal architecture.

How can you help the Red Hook Library? By volunteering, and donating books or documents as well as funds. Yes, this is an institution we want to keep relevant in the community.

Love the photos!  I use the library fot pointers, tips, and ideas on work...and to read newspapers and magazines that I do not get at home or anywhere else in town.  Our Library is having a major expansion and I am very happy about it.

Hi Jennifer,

Sounds to me like Red Hook has a great library and supporters to go with it. The idea of the Great Read sounds wonderful. I clicked over to your link and it was obvious it went on for a while, which is even better. Was that project spearheaded by the volunteers?

Another, question, have the hours/days for your library been cut back at all with the economic enviroment? Sorry to say ours in my community has really suffered. I'd love to hear more.

Marchel it does.  Those two ladies receiving the award certainly engaged the community this summer with The Big Read and many now are appreciative of the library.

Jennifer,
of course that it is relevant, I know that I don't go to the library, but I know it's always a great resource and there are people who doesn't have any great tools at homes then it's a good idea to take advantage of the good libraries around. Did you change the title? I tried to comment before and I could not do it, :) your blog dissapeared for a moment, just wondering, take care

Hi Lynda,

Yes the Big Read as you noticed occurred over several weeks.  The Friends of the Red Hook library and other volunteers from the community made the event a success, and now other communities want to do the same.

So far no cutbacks.  Maybe your communty need to see how relevant the library is to the community and more participation is probably needed from the community.

Red Hook has a great library.. and we have similary libraries in New Hampshire.  The libraries have so much going and they often are overlooked.  I am so glad you highlighted this wonderful Red Hook library.  It is unique not only in its shape, but in all that it has to offer.

Hi Ray,

Sometimes I start writing and forget to put the post in draft, this was the case with this post and when I noticed my error I immediately pulled it back.  Sorry for the confusion.

As you pointed out many still need the resources at the library, no computer at home. Yes the libraray is relevant.

Joan you are so right the library as an important resource is often overlooked, yet it has so much to offer.  For example those looking for work can find many tools at the library.

Hi Jennifer... this is a great reminder that even traditional institutions like libraries can shift and change to remain relevant in an age of changing technology and evolving community needs!

Jennifer, another great promotion of your local area.  Did you know that September is national library card sign up month?  So, this is very timely.

You can never replace the library with the Internet, one because it's a real place, two you do not forget how to interact with people face to face, three the atmosphere and smell of books is just so wonderful, four the public gets FREE workshops/lectures and if they have to pay, it's not an arm and a leg :) There are plenty of other great reasons as well, just keep adding to the list :)

Jennifer  That is an outstanding post on a very vital local resource.  It is obvious the library offers a plethora of programs to meet many interest levels.  Arthur gave me the word plethora - he was so impressed with the post as well  :)

Jennifer, libraries today are amazing, they are no longer just a place to check a book out, they offer a ton of other valuable services as well.

I was a little surprised at the recent Joomla, WordPress and Social Networking titles at the local library... not in the county-wide system, but IN the local library.

Jemnifer, libraries are some of my favorite places! Growing up, we went to the library at least once a week. As an adult, I recall someone bursting out laughing when I answered someone else's question with "Did you know the library has..." She told me she had noticed that I refer to the library a lot. Your Red Hook Library is deserving of a whole nuther blog to tell us all about the architecture. Intriguing building.
