The sheetrock story.
The amazing project of taking a dispossessed widow out of the apartment she had been holed up in and reclaiming and remodelling her house so she could move back in was one of the great things my church was involved in this year and one of my personal high points.
The garbage had been taken away. The roof had been taken off and replaced. The yard had been attacked by an army of volunteers from our church. The electrical had been put in by two different companies.
We were worried about the sheetrock. It was not something that volunteers would do very well. It needed to be done professionally.
Here is the story, as I know it.
Our church had a work party day where 150 people showed up. It was highly organized, with one of our buses running a shuttle, and pizza brought in for lunch, and an information table...
One of the volunteers left her rake. She came by later to see if she could pick it up.
She met John (the chief of police) or Gary (the retired contractor who worked on site every day). “Did you get to see the inside of the house?”
“No. There were too many people. I just worked on the yard.”
“Let me give you a tour!”
Her question was a simple one. “Who is putting the sheetrock on?”
“That is the next big project. It needs to be done professionally. We are praying about that right now.”
“Hmmm. Let me see if my company might be interested.”
“You work for a construction company?”
“Yes. One of the biggest in the area.”
“And they have sheetrockers?”
“Yes. There are about 150 drywall installers.”
She got in touch with the president of the company. He was interested. He spoke with the union about the guys volunteering. They cleared it. The next pay period, a letter from the President was included with the pay stubs.
Two supply companies donated the materials, including the trucks to haul it on site. Several Saturdays later, some 10 professional drywall installers showed up, on their own time, to install all the sheetrock.
Amazing story...
