Where the Heck Did All These Turkeys Come From? (Unstoppable Woman! – Day 24)

I moved back home to Maine two years ago. I know that I’ve been away for a while...(in my early 20’s I moved away to find adventures in other places. I moved back to Maine once in the early 90’s but moved away again)...but I grew up here and I have been back to visit frequently and I have NEVER SEEN SO MANY WILD TURKEYS AS I HAVE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS! They are everywhere!

So I did some research.

It seems that back in the early 1800’s turkeys were eliminated in Maine. Too much farmland and too much hunting, I guess. Starting in 1942 the Department of Inland Fisheries and Game tried to reintroduce turkeys by releasing 24 birds on Swan Island outside of Richmond. In the 1960’s game clubs tried unsuccessfully to reintroduce them. In 1977 and 1978 Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) brought 41 wild turkeys into Southern Maine from Vermont. In 1982, 33 wild turkeys were caught in Southern Maine and introduced further inland. In 1984, the same thing was done with 19 turkeys. None of these efforts brought the desired results, so again in 1987 and 1988 MDIFW brought in 70 wild turkeys from Connecticut.

Flash forward to the late 90’s – turkey reintroduction had worked so well that in 1999 3,000 hunting permits were issued. Ten years later, in 2009, 16,859 hunting permits were issued!!! Turkeys are now found in York, Cumberland, Oxford, Androscoggin, Lincoln, Knox, Kennebec, Waldo, Hancock, Somerset, and Penobscot Counties!

In my research I learned that turkeys are supposed to be able to fly up to 60 miles per hour and a distance of 1 mile. I learned that they require large areas of hardwoods trees and pines trees and they also need pasture lands for raising their young. I also learned that hens and their young group together to form larger flocks of up to 50 birds.

I understand now why they hang out on my property. We have the hardwood/pine/pasture thing covered. I also now understand why I’ve seen so many birds at once…there are at least 2 flocks of about 30 birds hanging around here. But, I don’t believe the whole flying thing. Most of the time they run in front of my car as I’m trying to drive down my driveway. They aren’t afraid of my dogs. Could care less. (Of course my dogs penned, but still….) They hang out outside of my kitchen window. And in the driveway in front of the garage doors.

So I just wanted to say to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife: You’ve succeeded! Wild Turkeys are Back! In a Big Way!

YOU CAN STOP NOW!

Lisa,

This is a great story, we have peacocks that occasionally get lost in our neighborhood, boy can they screech!  Do you think they will disappear around Thanksgiving?  HEHEHE.....

Melanie - my husband wants to get some peacocks.  I don't know if I could cope with a yard full of turkeys and peacocks!!!   Are you suggesting you might have peacock dinner this Thanksgiving????  :D

That's a very interesting piece of history Lisa.  I'm not sure if I could deal with them hanging out at my property though.

Lisa, Saw you were a newbie and thought I'd say hi. I joined in late May and feel like you, I get hooked! You sound like a free spirit ( Riding a bike?) Enjoy what you do!

On my property we have chicken. They lay fresh eggs!!! We have a spirited hawk who'd love to eat one of those chickens. Thank goodness we have them caged.

They always look a bit worried around Thanksgiving time!  The big fat ones hide behind the apple tree in my parent's yard, look both ways, and then dart across the yard when they think no one is looking.  I've never seen them fly either.

Charita - it's kind of funny to look out the window and see a huge flock of them.  Drives me crazy when they are outside the kitchen, though.  Too close to the house!

Ellen - Hi!  Thanks for stopping in!  My brother and sister-in-law raise chickens, too.  I did a blog on it that you might want to read: http://activerain.com/blogsview/1852860/it-s-raining-hen-s-hallelujah-unstoppable-woman-day-17-

Kristin - they have no worries from me, even at Thanksgiving.  I like to get my turkey from the grocery store!

Lisa, I did go through all of your blogs to see your sense of humor as you stated you have. I saw the one on the chickens after I made my comment above. I've got a sense of humor as well and a creative mind too. If you see my blogs on "The open truth about Windows" and "Doors, what did they ever do to you?" these are examples of my personality. I'm also writing a novel and hope to finish it by the end of the year, it is funny and is a piece of me as well.

Hi Lisa, I was about to answer you and say that since Turkeys are thought to be one of the stupidist creatures on earth, (apparently they can drown themselves in the rain), that it's almost Thanksgiving and they are giving you an early view.  However, I ready your post and got a very informative post about Turkeys in your area :)!  So, Thank you, but still....it is almost Thanksgiving :)!

Ellen - I've subscribed to your blog and can't wait to catch up!

Brenda - they are pretty stupid.  I wouldn't need to shoot one for Thanksgiving (if I was so inclined), I would just need to run one down since they can't even get out of the way of my car!

OMG, I'm glad I don't have turkeys in my yard . . . Luna BirdDog would be bringing carnage.

But that IS pretty cool! Gobble gobble! :)

Candice - my dogs (3 of them) don't even bark at the turkeys anymore because the crazy turkeys are unfazed.
