Bike MS: Ozark 2010 Ride - Another Successful Year
For the last 2 days, my hubby and I have worked as one of the motorcycle escorts for the MS bike run. Starting at the High School in Clever Missouri, we escorted over a 1000 cyclists over a 50 mile ride to Joplin Missouri, then back to Clever the following day.
So much organization for the Multiple Sclerosis Bike run goes into this two day event. Committees include:
Bike MS Work Parties - Bike MS Committee - Pre Event Opportunities - Packing & Loading - Route Signing - Set up Truck Drivers - HAM Radio Operator - Cyclist Check-in and Registration - Photographer - Security and Gear Vehicle Driver (SAG) - Medical - Hazard/Safety - Rest Stop Captain -Finish Line - Wrap up - Data Entry.
And then there's the motorcycle escorts - that's us!
This year there was approximately 25 motocycles. Our job is to make sure the cyclists are ok, fix flat tires, call the SAG drivers, and insure everyone arrives safely.
Last year, we changed over 20 flat tires. Heavy rains caused small gravel along the back roads and the route had to rerouted. This year, we had 80 degree weather and no rain. The main concern this year was dehydration for many of the riders.
I used to think the riders of this event was the younger crowd, but there are so many cyclists over 50. What a great way to stay in shape and work for a great cause. '
This year their goal is to raise $466,000 for the Springfield run. I just looked and they are over half way there.
