You know the type...looks FANTASTIC on the outside but is full of high maintenance drama on the inside. It might be fun for a short time when it's someone you are dating...NO fun at ALL when it's a house.
Don't be fooled by a beautiful exterior of a new home and skip the inspection. Building a home is a huge, complex mission. It involves a bunch of different people, split up into different sub contractor groups who were awarded the contract by being the "low bidder". That being said, even the best builders are aware that it's almost impossible to get the home built without missing something.
It could be just a plumbing fixture that wasn't tested for leaks or something electrical that isn't working. It could be so many of the little things that can be missed in such a complex mission as building a home. It could also be something that is potentially dangerous to yourself and your family or something that could take a big chunk of your money to fix down the line.
A thorough home inspection will point out problems while it's still early enough to bring them to the attention of the builder. You can have them fix the issues before you sign off on the deal.
Beware a builder who won't let you use an independent third party to do your home inspection. They may be hiding a big "hot mess".
