Business ethics: when to choose profit over whats right

So I don't know all of the issues surrounding the Falcons decision to keep Michael Vick on their team, and maybe I am naive, but this quote really shocked me.

Today the Atlanta Falcons announced in a statement "We cannot tell you today that Michael is cut from the team. Cutting him may feel better emotionally for us and for many of our fans, but it's not in the long-term best interests of our franchise".

I feel it is pretty safe to replace the words "Cutting him may feel better emotionally" with "It is the ethical thing to do".

It sickens me when leadership compromises on their beliefs for extra profit.

Horrible!  This guy is disgusting and deserves nothing.  As far as the Falcons thinking he is still profitable, I hope they are wrong!

Personally, I like what the Falcons are doing. This isn't about ethics ... it is about making this SOB pay for what he did.

My understanding is that if they release him, then it severs the contract and limits the team's options for going after the large amount of money they paid him as a signing bonus for the current contract. Make no doubt he will be cut by the Falcons ... at some point, just not today.

Reading these comments in a vaccuum and I can see the reaction. However having read a lot of Arthur Blank's comments and the comments of others about him; he is sick over this situation and was going to cut him the day it was announced before his legal team and the NFL stopped him.

I am more saddened by the prevalent and horrendous lack of role models among today's professional athletes.

I guess I am still wondering WHY - why did he do that? I guess we will never know.  I love animals and especially dogs so I certainly don't condon what he and the others did.  I just don't understand why.  I think whether he go to prison or not or whether he is cut will take care of itself.  I just want to know why.  What makes a person want to hurt a dog like that? why is still the question.

I am not concerned about the money because someone else will get that much and more and we'll read about them too.  Its crazy to think that someone can get that much money for signing -- they should have some kind of classes on money management for those young men to go through before they sign.  And call the class - can you manage money like you do the ball?

I believe he is released from the team as of a couple of days ago. I wish him no harm. Life won't be easy for him for a while.
