Jane, I'd agree that you'll get the most results for your dollar on the Internet. I don't think billboard ads, putting your name on bus benches or giving away refrigerator magnets is a good way to spend your marketing budget.
A first-rate website is a start. Once you get one website going, you may want to try two. Buy domain names that contain community keywords in areas where you sell. Develop a blogsite and contribute to it regularly. Network with first-rate agents, not only in your immediate area but all over the country. You'll eventually receive referrals from those contacts.
Another great way to spend your money is on designations. I highly recommend the CRS, ABR and e-PRO as worthwhile, not only for their designation value but also for the marketing opportunities they provide.
